Mrs. Dalton Explains
The Workings of The
NYA Program
I believe the people in Stokes
county will be interested in know
ing something of the NYA pro- i
gram in the county.
On January Ist 1 was appointed i
• |
NYA Supervisor for the county.
The State oflice in Raleigh gave
us four projects with wliicli to !
begin the program, A Clerical'
Helpers Project, A Lunch Room
Helpers Project, A Builders Re- i
pair Helpers Project and a Home!
Makers Project. This last pro-'
ject is not in operation due to tlu- {
need for machines, other equip- {
ment, coal for warmth, etc. Ma
chines however have been re
quisitioned from Raleigh and we
hope to have this project going
at an early date.
The other three projects are in
operation, anj although we have
only been going one month as T
write this, forty six young pec
ple will receive $14.00 each for
seventy hours work during the
month of January, with just a
very few exceptions, young peo
ple who have never drawn a pay
check before.
This $64-1.00 aside from bcint,
of benefit to the recipients wi'l
mostly be spent in the county,
and so will benefit our merchants
and others.
This money was brought into
the county without one bit of ex
pense to the county, other than
the Board of County Commission
ers have very generously furnish
ed me with a desk, a typewriter
and otho" smaller equipment and
Miss Elb Downing, Superintendent
of Public Welfare, has very gra
ciously given me oflice space in
the department of public welfare.
The State NYA department has
set aside $14,862.80 for the oper
ation Q f these four projects, and
wa hop? and expect that before:
this amount is expended that
many more thousands will havo
been ear marked for Stokes coun
ty.
NYA is not a charity „aniza
tion, and it is not in u.iy way
connected with WPA. It is just
what its name implies, A Na
tional Youth Administration to
give training and employment to
boys and girls between the ages
of eighteen and twenty-five who
need training and employment un
til they can find private jobs.
I want to thank Mr. J. C. Car
son, courty superintendent of Ed
ucation, the Board of County
Commissioners, Miss Downing and
others for their interest and co
operation in helping us launch |
this program.
We earnestly invite all those in
terested who would like details
of the program to call on us, at
our office in the department of
public welfare, in Danbury.
MRS. ALFRED SCALES DALTON,
NYA Supervisor
Stokes County.
