T. S. Petree Continues His Accounts As
Gathered From Records
When the court of Pleas and
Quarter Sessions met on March
30, 1862, it is interesting to note
that:
"The following Justices baing
present, to-wit: W. W. Cole, A.
C. Fulp, Joel Hawkins, Wm,
Poindexter, Hiram Smith, J. B.
Young, Joueph I. Smith, Z. S. Al
ley, Wm. G. Haynes, Caleb Ilill.
John P. Smith, Wm. H. Kington,
Joseph Neal, John Martin, Ira E.
Gentry, Jas. M. Hill, Jos. Gray
Martin, L. H. Southern, C. W.
McAnally, S. B. Taylor, Wm.
Davis, J. J. Martin, Wm. A. Mit
chell, James Hcnnis, W. B.
Vaughn and E. L. Martin all of
whom took an oath to support
the Constitution of the Confed
erate States of America. For the
want of a quorum, County Busi
ness. is put off until tomorrow,
M."
On the following day there was
still no quorum, however, "H.
Venable, J. R. Jewel, G. B. Tay
lor, Wm. Ward, Geo. W. Merritt,
W. V. Shelton and A. Jessup ap
peared and took the oath, and
the Court directed the Sheriff to
send notice to absent Magis
trates to appear tomorrow."
The following day, March 12,
1562, Geo. W. Wilson. Si'as Tuck
er, D. R. Leak, Wm. M. Gordon,
John J. Shaffer, Peter Tuttle and
S. L. Wall appeared and took
the oath.
I
Alexander Martin was appoint
ed at a special torn of court held
on May 24, 18G2 "to visit the sak
works in Washington county,
Virginia, with a view of pur
chasing salt for the County."
At June term, 1862, his report
was m;>dc to the court and the
following is taken from the min
utes:
'lt is further ordered by the
Court that said agent purchase
of the proprietors of said Salt
Works, one thousand bushels in
addition to the 3000 already pur
chased, and one thousand bushels
■of the State Agent for the manu
facture of Salt at Wilmington.
"It is further ordered by the
Court that Alexander Martin,
Agent for the County to purchase
salt, be authorized to borrow up
on the faith and credit of the
County, during twelve months,
such sums of money, not exceed
ing in the aggregate the sum of
Ton Thousand Dollars for the
purchase of salt for this County
- - - ordered further that said
Agent have delivered in Danbur.v,
to Lafayett Smith, the salt pur
chased for the County."
We are at a loss to understand
just how this amount of salt
could be used in Stokes county.
Perhaps it was used in the manu
facture of material used in con
ducting the war.
We find upon the minutes of
the court, at this same term,
(June, 1862), the following en
try:
"It appearing to the satisfac
tion of the Court that the 21st
Regiment of N. n

from this county was in the bat
tle of Winchester on the 25th of

5 the men of Capt. King's and
" Ligon's companies was killed or
'• wounded in safcT battle, and it al
so appearing almost certain
• from information before the
'• court that said Regiment has
'• been, and will shortly be in other
battles, it is therefore ordered
' by the Court that Dr. John Pep

• be appointed and directed to pro
■ ceed, without delay, as the agent

f wherever else, any of the brave

" way add to their comfort or res
' toration to health, and if possi
-1 ble procure furloughs for each
■ of the wounded ones and bring
them home to remain until they
• are restored to htalth.
"It is further ordered that Dr.
• William Withers of this county
' be appointed to proceed to Rich
; mond, Va., for the same purpose
and look after the wounded
Stokes soldiers under, and in
ursuance of the above order".
On Sept. 8, 1862, it was order-1
ed that "The wardens of the poor
be authorized to borrow money
from time to time as may be
I ,
needed for the purpose of paying
out for the Suport of
wives or familios, whose hus-1
bands are in the army and who;
arc needy and in want of sup
port" - - - and further ordered
' that the agents to sell salt for
this county be authorized to ac
cept $lOO, $5O, and $2O bills,
Confederate issue from the plat*
engraved by Hayes & Ludwig,
Va., dated September 2nd, 1861.
and that they may send the same
to the Treasury to exchange for
i other money, &c." It was furth
• er ordered "that the County
: Trustee pay Joha Pepper $57.4"3
. it being his traveling expenses to
the army and back under a for
f mer order of the Court."
j On Sept. 9, 1862, the following
/ is recorded on the minutes of
1 the court:
"Nathaniel Moody, Sheriff, re
•- turned the following persons as
belonging to the army, and as
d such exempted by law from pay
