Y. —With a firm ness undiminished by the latest i phases of Europe's war, President Rooseve'.t voice? onto again Men day a hope that h. !.'Q>.CJ itaie.® could keep out of the conflict. Certainly Americans—and he included himself in his statement —were all against war just as they were all against sin, he as serted. Yet, with the caution with which he always has appraised publicly Ameijfica's chanoes of keeping out of the fighting, the Chief Executive did not go so far as to say he believed the nation could remain at peace. In fact, he went to some pain 3, at a press conference, to make it I plain that he was voicing only a j hope, as he has done many times before. Even so, his words attained a measure of extra significance from the act that some critics had been contending the admin istration was nudging the country toward active participation in the war and some administration of ficials had been urging greater and more effective aid for foes of the axis, including use of the navy. i I McAnally Reunion I To Be H£ld July 6th ! The huge amphibian Gsumann am'ou.l ifco or mercy plane which thousands inspected on a three day state wide tour oi' North Carolina has I ieturned to New York where com plete ambulance and hos|J£ai' equipment will be rapidly in stalled so that the mercy ship can be rushed to England to bo gin the work of rescuing crews of combat planes downed at sea, carrying injured civilians in bomb raided areas on the English Isles. Modern tactics of warefare have made airplane ambulances, unknown in previous wars, an absolute necessity. Without ad ditional mercy planes of the type which the Old North State Fund proposes to present the people of j England as a gift of citizens of this state, Enghwd will continue to be sorely pressed lor facilities j to relieve the suffering of civil ians and members of her armeJ foicis and thousands will die for the lack of skilled medical aid.
