The Danbury Reporter N. E. PEPPER, Editor, and Publisher Issued Wednesdays at Danbury. N. C., and entered at the Danbury postofiice as second class matter, under act of Congress. Thursday, Nov. 27, 1941 INCIDENTS OF THE ROAD On a beautiful North Carolina highway, the November landscape in its setting- of crimson and gold and russet and drab, was glamorous in the sunlight. A beautiful girl lay face downward on the pave ment, trying to rise. She had come through the windshield and as she clutched at her throat try ing to stop the gushing flood, trying to get a breath, patrolmen and others arrived and assist ed her to a sitting posture which she was unable to hold. She was dead. A dark clotted stream trickled off the pavement to be absorbed in the earth. At the foot of a slight embankment against the butt of a pine rested a crumpled mass of battered iron, once called a car. Still holding the steering wheel, looking like he was laughing, the driver sat with glaring, sightless eyes. The lower part of his body was clasped between irons hurled by the impact. He was also dead. This was only an incident of the road, and is only one of a hundred other similar tragedies, many of them even more horrible, that occur on our beautiful North Carolina highways EVERY MONTH. Go to the hospital and hear the piteous story of the maimed; go to the funeral parlors and raise the cloth from the mound on the slab. But is there anything you can do about it? ! THE PARK AND ITS GENIUS Had a pleasant visit from our friend Bob Or mand the other night. Mr. Ormand is the genius of that delightful area of the Saura Mountains known as Hanging Rock State Park. If you have never visited this enchanting place, t:o up some time. Among North Carolina parks we are told the State authorities love Hanging Rock best. Bob Ormand has done a remarkable work up there, with his limited resources The handiwork in stone designed by him was done by CCC boys who, as soon as they become trained, usually leave as their terms are limited. Thus the teacher , must constantly train new hands. We have mentioned before the charming \ a 1 house that looks like a medieval chateau at foot, of the great hill, and facing the lake. Now the administrative building is rlow" ing, and it will probabl* 7 be even more att» phan the bath house. Ormand has a soul "t beauty and Hi • blended with utility. r J marks of his ' kill i creative art of arc I '' "jture, demr 'v. 1 Hanging Rock, must endure for ages. I Highly paid labor at government dot grants has depleted tl> ranks of the COCY Ifcantly attracting the boys, but Orm fßßently plods on. Hi •. fairy garden slowly Bersistantly grows and blossoms.
