MATTER IN HANDS OF
STATE B. I. AND F. 8.1. i'
i
j
Saturday the Board of Elec
tions, of which A. J. Ellington is
chairman, received a threatening
letter si: no i by "An Able Com
mittee," and mailed at King.
The Utter charged that the
Democrats had stolen the las;
election and would try to steal
this one, and threatened the deatn
of Ellington, who, it was charged
in the letter, "should have been
killed long ago," and also prom
ised that the "Able Committee"
would "get Sheriff John Taylor
and Solicitor R. J. Scott," and
would blow up the court house. |
The officials threatened were
not in the least alarmed, yet they
cailed up the State Bureau of In
vestigation whose representatives
were immediately on the scene
and were furnished the letter.
The Federal Bureau of Investi
gation also getting wind of the
matter at once sent officials here
the following day.
| Eoth agencies are now on the
trail of the letter writer, who if
caught will have to answer the
l
consequences of his threats and
for using the mails to blackmail.
The Reporter is informed jus'
before going to press that strong
evidence against the guilty par
ties is now in the hands of the
officers.

I j
Large Majorities Given President Roosevelt,
• Governor Cherry, Senator Hoey, Congressman
Folger and All County Officials
!-tok"s county went Democratic again Tuesday by large majorities,
notwithstanding the Republicans put up the hardest fight they
have made for years.
,! Several factors worked in favoi
,'of the Republicans, chief of which
.'was the burden of war, the ca .s'
, of which of course was charged to
s President Roosevelt. Many ig
norant persons were told that :i
Dewey were elected their boys;
g would be sent straight homc.j
whereas if Roosevelt won he;
r , would keep them in the war for j
s a long period, and that the war'
y , would last four years longer.
I This argument had considerable-j
effect naturally on those voters]
*
. who did not know the truth.
9 ' Another factor that worked
Btrongly against the Democrats
was that Ihe Republican National j
Committee had hopes of carrying
North Carolina for Dewey and o.",
} _ i
electing several Republican
gressmen. Consequently the con
t gressional districts were well su;- (
plied with northern money fro:::!
the State "Constitutional Demo'

crots" with which to effect their
I organization.
I But it was all a useless and fu
tile fight against the Stokes or
ganized Democracy which gained
ts usual victory,
j The splendid leadership of Pies
ident Roosevelt, the high prices of
D
tobacco which the I'arnru rs have
been receiving, the magnificien!
j record of the State Democrat
and the clean and able and eco
, noniical County government, a!
contributed to the victoiy.
