On page 307, Chapter 248 of the laws of New York the following act appears, which was passed May 5th, 1884, signed and approved by Grover Cleveland, Governor of New York, now the! Democratic 'candidate for President of; the United States: Sec-1. tThej colored schools in the city of New York, jnowiexisting and iji operation, shall hereafter b classed and known and be contin ued as wartjl schools and primaries, "with their present teachers, unless such teachers are re- j moved in the manner provided by law, and such schools shaa be (under the control and manage ment of the! school officers of the respective r - i ' wards in which they are located in the same manner and to the same "extent as other ward schools, AS SHALL BE OPEN FOR THE EDUCATION i ; J OF PUPILS F6K WHOM ADMISSION IS SOUGHT WITH OrT REQARIX TO RACE OR COLOR.
