The constitution does not protect the homestead from the sheriff's hammer at all times.- It protects it as long as the homestead pays the State for so doing. That is, as long as the taxes levied on the homestead are kept paid up, the homestead is safe. Taxes must come or homesteads must go. They come very near going once. The Radical legislature of 1SGS-9 issued special tax bonds to the amount of S23,GS0,(XX). . It is hard for poor North Caroli nians to comprehend that amount. It was nearly one-third of all the real property in the State. The taxes collected for that one legislature's waste nearly bankrupted the people and did bankrupt the Radical party. It has never had another legisla ture. It came qear having one last year. The present system of County Government almost left us. Suppose it had? Property in the east would have deteriorated, the amount of taxes collected therefrom would have be come smaller and snialler, and the center and j western parts of the State would have been called upon to make up the deficit. That would have increased the rate of taxation, the burden would have grown, taxes would have in creased iii amount, and hundreds ot 1 J i x nomtwus nuuiu nave guae iu pa lor the recKiessness ana ineonine nce of negro magistrates and negro commissioners in the east'. -Study the County Government question. Editors : When a subject takes full possession of one faculties, it is natural to love to talk about it, arid yourj correspondent being just now full of a recent trip across the Blue Ridge to Asheville, would like to speak of a few of the leading points of interest on that journey. As, one by one, pe;ks and chains of moun tains loomed before me, I thought, how grand ! how magnificent ! But when our journey further up ward revealed the matchless beauties of Round 'Knob, all behind seemed tame in comparison Mountains to right of us, mountains to left of us, mountains in front of us, and vet the skill of man has made a way out of that lovely valley, and we steam out onward and upward. One moment out of sigh t of hotel, valley and foun tain, the next delighted by another glimpse of them. Thus we feast our eyes on its ever changing beauties. V e are shown a track far above our heads and told that we are to reach that point on our way. We look and can hardly believe it possible, yet puff, puff, up we go,our noble engine doinggrandly its work. ! Soon we are looking down from that very point, our heads almost dizzy at the sight. Surely here we see one of the grandest triumphs of the engineer. e were greatlv indebted to Cap tain Murphy, the conductor in charge, who kindly called our atten tion to points of interest along the route. lhe kept us continually entranced. One moment we were looking up at the stupendous grandeur of mountains above us, the next holding our breath as we looked into the deep gorges below. : We reached Asheville about seven, p. in., and as we wound our way tip to Oakland Heights, we expanded our lungs 10 ineir uimosi canacuv, -XI 7 .
