Is there any trouble in answering this: "If wajes are increased bv trotection, win- do those protected manufacturers indorse protection and sjA'nd large sums ot money to uphold it?" , . This is not quite so easy, but any protectionist ought to be ready to give the answer. If wages are in creased, that is, if by the American system of protection each protected manufacturer is compelled to pay higher wages than if he were unpro tected, why does this same protec tionist spend money to induce Con gress to continue the system that continues to take monev out of his pocket ? i It is a stunner. Nobody can understand it. Of course anybody can see that this is a mere dodge on the part of the protectionists, unless these high protectionists are made out of a finer quality of dust than the ordi nary run of men. If there is any human nature in a protectionist he is probably swayed by some of the same influences that control other men. How would other men act ; how do other men act? Most 'men hire labor where they cau hire it cheapest. Most men pay only such wages as the labor market demands, and no and a regular, daisy in all respects. Xo need to say the Courier force en joyed it and the thanks of all con cerned are hereby temiered the clev er donor. Latimer, president, resigning' the chair to Mr. W. H. Chadbourn, vice-president, offered the following resolutions : Whereas,' bv a majority vote of the directors of the Wilmington Seacoast Railroad Co. it was resolved, as a practical test of the views held by said ma jority of the directors, that Sunday trains should be run over the Wil mington Seacoast railroad for a cer tain number of Sundays: and, where as, said certain number of Sundavs during which trains have been run over the said road have passed, now, therefore, be it Jlemlwl, That in or der to give a similar and fair practi cal test to the views held by the minority of the directors upon the question . (but not in any manner deciding upon the merits of the ques tion involved), no trains will be run over the W llmington Seacoast rail road on Sunday, from and after Sun day the r.Jth mst., up to the next an nual election for directors and ofli cers of the said railroad company. The resolutions were unanimously adopted. So, those of our citizens who desire to spend Sunday at the Hammocks, must make up their minds to go down Saturday evening, and come back Monday morning, bright and early, if necessary. The true reason why high protec tionists spend money to keep this system of legalized robbery, is be cause it puts millions of dollars in their. -pockets, and enables them, not to pay higher vvages, .but to spend more money for horses and carriages, and fine houses, and $10,000 cooks, and steam yachts, and Scotch hunt ing grounds. " Cleveland has been President four years and no disaster has over whelmed Northern institutions, no negro's liberty has been invaded. The wisdom of Cleveland and Cleveland's advisers, the conserva tism of the Democratic part)' are re sponsible for this. The broad viewed men of brain and courage that have stood up year after year in defense of our great blessings, and have, through dark ness and poverty, been true to the great principles of Democracy that guarantee to every man full and un molested liberty, have wrought this deliverance from ignorant dread of enslavement. The Democratic prin ciples of equality before the law of fraternity ; the Democratic desire to do the greatest good to the greatest number are triumphing and the world is learning that America can be true to her traditions, true to her founders, true to her posterity. We hope that the project will be carried out. vNothing would be of more benefit to our city than three or four more cotton factories, and our citi zens ought all to take an interest in this project and encourage the idea. The coin is of cop per, about the size of a silver dollar, and has the figure of a woman ("with an olive branch in one hand and a tripod in the other), on one side, and a good figure of the head of George the III on the other.
