Special Correspondence to The Plant. Raleigii, N. C, Oct. 3, '88. I Mr. r. 11. luisbec made a very graceful presentation to the Supreme Court yesterday morning, of an oil portrait of theflatc Hon! There is more talk ot the desire 01 the Republican Senators to have their, bill reported and acted upon at family, j At last, and certainly with rare tardiness, the State is beginning to collect portraits of her distinguished sons. XL Alex. Walker, Editor. Durham, N. C.,0ct. 3, 1888. Tobacco sales to-day pretty large, mostly tobacco on consignment. We have four countits repre sented by farmers as tollows: Caswell county bv Msrs. L Burch, L. Hunt, Jost j.h Diil, Long. Durham countv bv Messrs. J Tu rner, J. S. Fors y t i n-, S. J . H ester Granville county b Mr. A.S. Car rington. Terson county by Mr. M. L. Morgan. J. R. M. M. Henderson, N. C. Our market the past wee"k was very active for all grades, particu larly the lemon colors. The sales were very good last week. The late frost of last Saturday night damaged the tobacco standing in the fields in this part of the State to some extent, but not very heavy so far as heard from. We see that the frost was very heavy about Danville and Lynchburg, Va. W. H. S. A: Co. Richmond, Va. Continued trading in wrappers was the feature -of the day and a good many were sold, some to home parties and some for -shipment to New - York and the West. There is a decidedly better feeling for this grade, but very little trading in any other. Prices obtained wjirejiot "boom nnces by any meansUit were probably a shade better than could have been obtained a week ago. There are no new develop- ments regarding tne irost anu it is highly probable that before it will have another chance to do harm the most of the tobacco will be housed. Senator Vance says to-day that the minority himself and Senator Har ris have not put pen to paper yet on the tariff report, but can finish it in a day or two. He states that the two reports, with the Republican bill, will be presented to the fcenate prob ably on Thursday. Messrs. Vance and Harris received this mornine from Senator Beck his answer to the Republican bill. It may be pre sented as his own individual views. He- does not desire any changes made in it. There was a report at the Capitol to-day that the two reports would be made to the feenate tomorrow. Mr. Stone Cowan, who has iust returned from the Pacific coast, says that he found among the Oregon Democratic leaders some degree of confidence that the State will reverse the verdict of the recent election and give a majority of two thousand for Cleveland and Ihurman. The Democrats in California are very a l 1 . i i sanguine. All witn whom he con versed spoke in no uncertain tones of the prospects in November. The Republicans have been counting on the accessions to the population of Southern California, which are mainly from the North. But the Democratic calculation is very dif ferent. It is based on the claim that most of the incomers have been Pro hibitionists who will support Fiske rather than Harrison. It is said that the southern part of the State is as sure as any other lor the Demo cratic candidates. The Chinese question will materiallv aid the Democrats. Hon. Henry G. Turner, of Geor gia, brother of Dr. Vines E. Turner, of Raleigh, is. just back Irom New Haven, Conneticut, where he spoke to a large and appreciative audience of intellectual people. He says that the Democrats of New lork and Connecticut are sanguine of success in November. The'seerets of the departments of political importance are often di vulged by rascally Republican clerks. A case in point is the apph cation of the railroad in which Chairman Brice is said to have ah interest where the honest Land Com missionerStockslager rejected, in the is in a critical stage and rains, such as fell yesterday and last night, are costly things to the farmers. Ihe colored btate fair' has made complete changes of all its officers save the president. Unsatisfactory management is the cause ot this. The Cross and White trial gets tamer and tamer. There is no new evidence, and no hint of anything sensational. Keyser, Who it was pro posed should be a new witness for the defendnants, is in Washington. He was not summoned until just as he was ready to leave upon a recall by the Department of Justice, and he obeys that call rather than the Superior court. He will-hardly be here. There is a need for more literature to be circulated in this State, through the National Executive Committee. It has been suggested that great quantities of this ' be circulated speedily. ;': Nichols is at work here, in a very quiet way. He goes personally to see workingmen whom he thinks he can influence and talks to them. He also gives them all sorts of documents and is making a bitter fight for pro tection theories. James B. Woods, ex-attorney, of fetatesville,. was put into States prison yesterday and will be there three years. His crime is forgerv He is by all accounts a tough custo-! mer. he was disbarred bv the courts for his nefarious practices. How many . persons know that there are twenty-five agricultural so cieties in North Carolina? That is the correct number. Not only has the frost hurt the to bacco, buUhe cotton, corn, peas and sweet potatoes in a number of local ities. So the" reports show. Some reparts say that pea sare hurt 50 per cent. The fair at Concord will be visited next week by the commissioner of agriculture who will not only talk, but will establish an experiment farm. He finds these farms very popular. Several will have exhibits at the approaching fair. Janauschek, a great actress, will be here fair week and will of course prove a decided attraction. She will have among her support Mr. Louis H. Haywood, a native of Raleigh. In talks with two Drominent Aslieville, X, C. As stated in my report, Saturday 29th ultimo, wc had a slight frost that morning doing little or no dam age.
