The returns from 57"J of the 1,1h precincts in the State up to mid night last niht pave Cleveland oS-1 gain over his vote in 1-SS4. He is, as far as can be judged, running ahead of the State ticket. Some bad news came in just after midnight. There was an intimation, ialf an hour earlier, that the Demo crats had lost the Oth district. A special from Asheviile confirmed it Hid stated tliat there was scarcely a loubt of Johnston's defeat. - It was thought some time ago that that dis trict was doubtful, but ten days ago it appeared that Johnston would win by olJOor 000. In that far western part of the State news of Eaves "reliables"' and Pinkerton ''detectives" did not pene trate thoroughly. I hat news would iave changed the result Mingled with the pure and una lulterated joy at Nichols1 defeat is sorrow of that at Johnston and Morehead, for the latter appears to je assumed. as a .tact. It looks as if Skinner is all right in the first district, but returns are' certainly scarce. That remark also applies to the second district as well, for no one here knows ' whether Chaetham or Simmons is the winner. As Mabson's vote is so very" light, Simmons has a great deal to over come, but as far as known he lias uone splendidly. Olheial reports show that the Leg islature is 'Democratic and with a good margin It) in the Senate, ai d 11 in the House ; "at the very least. In this calculation the Democrats are given the doubtful counties. Full official returns show tliat the Democrats carry the counties of Al exander, Anson, lleaufort, Bruns wick, Purke, Buncombe, Catawba. Chatham, Cleveland, Cumberland, Duplin, Durham, b rankiin, Halifax, Harnett, Haywood, Hertford, Ire dell, Jackson, Lincoln, McDowell, Mecklenburg, Moore, 2sash, Orange. Pamlico, Pitt, Rockingham, Rowan, Rutherford, Stokes, Swain, Yancey, Wilson, Macon; Clay, Graham and Transylvania oS. . I he same class of returns show that the Republicans have carried Davie, Cranville, Greene, Guilford, Madison, 'Northampton, -Folk, Ran dolph, Washington, Watauga, Yad kin, Mitchell, Henderson and Cher kee. 14. All the interest yesterday, wns in the Cleveland vote, in New York. Chairman Price telegraphed here that he refused to acknowledge Cleve land's defeat. Mr. ..John C. Reid, managing editor of the New York Times, telegraphed Mr. Spier Whita ker that Harrison had carried New York by "5,000 or more. This pretty well settled matters. . Deep as the excitement has been here, there have been fewer outward aiMpvisible signs of it than ever be fore. There lias been no cheering, no turbulance among the colored people, no threats of violence of any sort. Four years ago a great riot was narrowly escaped ;this year the con trast was happy. Very few people here knew of the impending troubles at Durham, but those who were aware of them had no sort of doubt of the ability of the Durham people to 'suppress them. There need be no fears of rioting in North Carolina. The troops are in shape for read' assemblage always. They are all on lines of railway and telegraphic communication and riot ers can speedily be crushed. 1 he end of the beautiful, but most unseasonably warm went'ier is greeted with pleasure. Rain bg:ni falling last night. Governor Scales has respited Millie Poteat (the negro woman who was to have been hanged at Yancey -vi.lle to-morrow), until Deccember 7th Arson was her crime. Governor Scales will go to -Greensboro to-morrow. 'There were the most conflicting claims about' Wake county yester day." 1 1 was said late last night that the Democrats had elected all their legislative and county ticket, save Capt. Mack Page. It is expected that in a few days the counsel of Cross and White will attempt to get their case before the u. S. Supreme court, in a writ error.' Of . Is Life AVorth Living'.'
