George Wise Appointments Personal Special Correspondence to The Plant. Washington, v. 19. To-day there was a crush at the British Legation. All sorts of things were sold, furni ture, bric-a-brac, books, &c, kc. Iut for the disaster to the Hank of Durham, I would have expected one or two of your enterprising citizens to have been present. It was a rare chance to get some costly and unique articles' very cheap. Lord Sackville- West's wines are' .said to be the finest m America. ltie.-e go un.ier ine auctioneer's hannner also. The employes of the House of Representatives are still figuring on the returns, trying their level best to get an extra Democrat or two in. Mon. (leorge Wise was at the Capi tol to-day making an ellbrt to en courage them. He was displaying some fraudulent tickets with 'which the Republicans. in' Virginia tried to compass his defeat. lie says it would be a (ine thing for Bill v .Mahone to be a member of Harrison's Cabinet. He thinks nothing would please the Democrats of Virginia better. He laughed heartily at Quay and Ma hone's boast about superintending the count in Virginia and explained how impossible it would be for either one of them to interfere in. the mat ter. The folloing storekeepers and augers were appointed to-day: John W. May, A. A. Morgan, .1. W. Chamberlain, John F. ' Brown, and J. F. Byerley, all in the Fifth Dis trict. Capt. Arthur. Barnes has returned to hi.3 duties on the Senate side of the Capitol. Mr. Henry (I. Williams is expected in a few days. He is Assistant Superintendent of the Document room and will prove a most valuable addition to the fig urers ot the Capitol. A man he can't count in, is not worth making much over. News from the Capital. Special Correspondence to The Plant. HalektH, N. C, Xov. 17, ?8S. Capt. C. M. Roberts reorts that members-elect have nearly all chosen seats in the Senate and House halls. There -will hardly be a 'Democrat side'" and ' Republican side"' in the House this time lor the reason that the Democrats have such a large number of Representatives that seats and positions all over the hall will be required tor their acconi mod ition. It was learned by your correspon dent to-day that the disabled Con federate pensioners will hold their convention here during the session or the legislature. An old veteran says that evei'y maimed and wounded soldier who can In anv means get here will attend. It appears that the- think the State amply able, and should give a much broader and liberal recognition of their services than it now does ; and they will press their claim in this "direction. It is reported that the railroads will furn ish "passes generally to all who may wish to attend. It is certain that a new bank will be in operation here soon. The Chamber .of Commerce and Indus try suggested and discussed the im perative need ot more ample facili ties for obtaining business capital, and this set the ball iii motion. Posi tive and satifrfavtory arrangements are now being made for its early., opening. .The stockholders of the North Carolina Wagon Company will(om plete their organization here next Monday night, by the election of di rectors and, oilicers, and it is pro posed to. begin the manufacture of wagons within the next sixty days. JThere are now quite a number of Northern visitors here, who stopped while en route for various points to spend the winter ; but after ''taking in?,the town were j favorably im pressed with it, that they will hi bernate here instead of at their first destination. . Rev. W. (1. Clement?, who has for some time past been pastor of the Christian church in this citT, hrg been called to and accepted another station. Rev. J. L. Foster, of Ala mance county, will succeed him, and begin about December 1st. State Auditor Roberts is now busy in preparing warrants for the large number of pensioners in the State. He will have them all out about December 10th- The-theatrieal season here will be a gay and lively one. Nearly even night in December has been booked for some attraction. - Among the' spe cialties mav be mentioned "Bill Nye' land Josh Whitcomb Riley, who are arranging to appear here on the 24th instant in entertainment ; also the Hamilton New York,. Church Choir Opera Company on Dec. 3d and 4th. This company is composed of. prom inent and able vocalist who sing in the grand church choirsof New York. A special attraction will be the pre sentation of'Josephv a grand cantata. by local vocalists supported by a chorus of sixty voices and orchestra. This will be the grandest affair ever undertaken by amateurs in this State. The cotton receipts here for the past week exceed those of the same week last year by ."S4 bales. The market is strong and thoroughly lively. Then. is already some lively can vassing and "running to and tro,? for positions in. the legislature. W. P. Turner, a wounded Confederate soldier, will try to get the position of Doorkeeper to the Senate over W. V. Clifton, who has held it for about twentv vears. TOBACCO DKl'AKT.M EXT. lev. AValker, Editor. rham, X.C., Nov. 2), 1SSS. Prettv fair breaks of tobacco on the market to-day and a large per cent, of it old stock and some very good stock. There is no giving way ol prices, if any -change, prices are higher for the past few days than be fore. The following named persons had tobacco on the warehouse floors to-day : Messrs. . L. Il.-nry, 11 P. Kogers, L II. (irillinU. V. .Higshee, .lames Hedgepeth, J. V. Howard, (1. S. Sbeppard. I). V. Howard, H. (..'. Ladd, L. M. Howard, A. Spikes, W. S. Newton, .1. For two issues we have had noth ing to sav on the tobacco line. We were unexpectedly called from the city, is our only excuse. No changes worthy of note in the tob;icco world, nor do we expect to have any material changes to report this side of Xmas; but earlv in the new year we look forward to see an active market, and all desirable goods will be sought at better figures, and there will be a demand for all grades that can be utilized into any of the popular brands ot the country, dood and. desirable stock will be taken at good prices and just here stick a peg but, much ot the new crop is 1 T 1 1 1 . common and undesirable and the world is full of just such stock that no person wants and prices will rule low. File this for future reference. Henderson, X. C. The oiieringsr. and sales the past week on our market were very large and the market very active for all grades, and the sales were satisfac tory to planters. Cutters ranged at very full prices, also line wrappers. The line stripping weather that we have -had recently will doubtless bring heavy sales to market the com ing week. No change in the prices worthy of note. W. II S. k Co. niclmioml, Ya. Market was dull and featureless this morning ai:d no sales were made on 'Chancre of note. There was some little trading in cutters at offices, but it has not amounted to much. The writer has seen a good deal of the new crop, aud thinks he can safely say it is the meanest he ever saw, the crop of 1SS1 excepted. There is no reason why trood tobacco of the old crop should not sooner or later command good prices, and we look for a better condition of affairs as soon as the trade generally realizes how poor the new crop is.
