From the hurrying to and fro on the streets Tuesday morning, with glimpses now and" then of men "in uniform, itjwas evident that some unusual event was at hand. The day had arrived when the Durham',. Light Infantry and Rand were to' take their departure for the State Encampment at Wrightsville. The boys donned their new and comfortable fatigue uniforms ' and repaired to the armory, when they were addressed .with words of good cheer and kind wishes by their highly esteemed commanding officer, Capt. A little after 12 o'cloek. the Dur ham 'Light Infantry, headed by the Hand in their bright find Mashing uniforms, proceeded ' to the depot, where they awaited the arrival of .the second section of the east-bound train, which arrived about l:3o with the Reidsville Light Infantry, Reids ville Ritles, Asheville Light, Infantry and K-ichlands Ritles. The Durham Light Infantry boarded the car that had been sidetracked here for them, oid at 2:10 the train pulled out amid the cheers oft ho' large number that had assembled to bid our bovs good by. Keinejnber Our L)end Heroes, The Ladies' Hollywood Memorial Association, of Richmond, ha3 is sued an. appeal that shonld elicit liberal response at the hands of grateful North Carolinians. -Aid is asked for in the laudable work of marking the graves of Confederate, soldiers in Hollywood cemetery." The figures presented to us bear si lent but impressive testimony tojihe valor of our sons who wore the -grey in the gigantic struggle, andjj we should bow our heads in hurmlia-i tion that we have so long permitted their last resting place to remain un marked. In this cemetery aone sleep 6,000 soldiers and of this num ber 1,7S0, nearly one-third, were from North Carolina. Nearly a quarter of a century has elapsed since the last swjord was unsheathed and the last gun waa fired,1 and yet we have failed to show as we should have shown, our ap- preciation of the courage and self sacrifice of a3 valiant heroes as ever marched to the defence of home and native land. The past is gone and beyond recall, but we now have op portunity for some degree of repara tion by responding cheerfully to this appeal of the ladies. It is pro posed to place a small granite block at the head of each grave so as to permanently mark it. The Plant has opened a bureau for the reception of contributions to this noble undertaking ami will take pleasure in aeknowleding through its columns all amounts subscribed for this purpose. Don't stand back because you are not able to give a large amount. Give what you can, remembering that small sums added together make a grand total. The Plant's list is headed by the name of Mr. J. S. CROP REPORTS continue very unsatisfactory, but we hear enough to satisfy us that Durham county is in a bad Jix. No rain to do any good since' the first or second of June. Gardens arc literally burnt up. Some portions of Alamance, Person, and a small portion of Granville have had some showers that were considerable help to the groyv- mg crops, but many portions oi tlie same counties are still sunering tot rain lticlunond Va. Auction sales to-day were very- much diversified, consisting oi sun cured, scmi-briirhts and some lew- packages of fairly good and desirable bright tobaccos, l'rices paiu ior sun r cured were very satisfactory, but it is a hard matter to get our buyers to bid any thing like the value ot bright tobacco when it is ofl'ered at the lioard. and as a rule the niaiority o packages ofl'ered have to be tlken in. Private transactions in Ibrights amounted to nothing to-day. I Negotiations are pendiag on large lots of shipping tobaccos foi use of Foreign Governments, and it i 3 liighly probable that in the next leiv days, heavy sales will result. , it tjiey o, shipments of this class of tobacco will materially lighten ourl stocks, and create a firmer and better feel ing generally.
