ESTABLISHED IN 1872. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 16,! 1888. TOBACCO DEPARTMENT. Alex. Walker, Editor 1 Durham, N.C., Nov. 13. 1888. We had pretty good size breaks to-day. No perceptible change in' quality of stock offered. !' Some little excitement with the pinhookers to .day, but. ire are sure it will not ma terially change prices, and we think it will soon blow over. . There! were eight counties represented on the warehouse floors : . jj M Alamance county by Mr. J. T. Trolinger. ; i ' -U ' Caswell county by Messrs. J. B. Griffin & Co., A. A. H.O'Bf kint, Pollard. i j :' . j We would be pleased to have our reporters from the different markets to report more promptly.: We would like to have the reports !as near daily . as 'possible. It will only take i few minutes to give the general run of the market, and occasionally we would be glad to have quotations of "prices. We do not care to have - prices quoted only' when perceptible changes have taken place that we may see what that change is.1 Henderson, XJ C. : KeceiDts and sales on our market the pkst week have been small. The weather for the past few days has been unfiivorable for ; hauling to bacco to market, and being the! week for! the election, caused the falling off ;Of receipts, i Although the offer ings were small the prices - ranged full up for all tobaccos j of decided character. No change in the j mar ket! prices to report. The weather is now veryfine lor stripping and we may soon look lor heavy sales, ! r v . 11. . & Co. Letter From Itev- Dr. Yates. We copy from the Stale Chronicle the following letter from Rev. Dr. E A. Yates, the beloved pastor of Trin ity Methodist church, in reference to his I brother, the lamented . J Yates, editor of the Charlotte Dem ocrat, whose death was announced a few weeks ago : I , Mil' "n compliance with your request I give you, as briefly ;as 1 can, a few points, with regard! to my dear brother: ; i f "While a mere child his father's health failed, and his 0arly education vvasj therefore, ? limited; but his mother being a woman of remarkable mental ability and goodness, was able with- the aid of the common scnoois oi uiai uay, to give him a good start in books.- He was fond , of learning," and the printing office of that day was one of the best schools He took to it as naturally as the mind takes to anything for which it has a talent and fondness, and of course rose japidly until he became almost a. nc cessity to the proprietor and editor., of the paper. He mastered books by the midnight lamp, and quite early in youth he had acquired a wide and accurate knowledge of men and things. He earlv imbibed the political principles of Thos. Jef- ierson, ana aruenuy loving ins na tive State, he never swerved from scientiously believed was the best tor the whole people. ' i i He was a statesman, con fining himsdf with heroic espousal to the : i i . ill i . pen oi me euuor anatne composing stick ot the printer. -He jhad but little gift as a public speaker, , but his .natural and1 acquired ability would have enabled him to fill with success almost any office within the gift of the people, j j J M "Some of the I elements of hi character were, his unflagging in dustry. He was j never illeL iThe Sabbath was his only rest! day, and he observed it as the pivot of his pi eiy 10 warns uou, ana maae it a matter of principle never I to go to his office or open his mail i on the ' T 1 U J.. i i i-- "He had an analytical, clear and discriminating mind, seeing! truths and fallacies as with lightning glance KScpm prehension was remarkable. This writer never knew another man who tyifcfld come so near seeing the; end-from the beginning as he. ; '! "Hi common sense and good judg ment were matters ' oi common re mark, kr much so that his! opinion was, valuable about almost any thing, and was sought far and wide. II was. when a no v. eronnmi'iil nnrl saving pi uis money, lieing a gen eral favorite with editor, proprietor and othermen employed in the office where he'was, as a boy, lea'rning the business, the dimes and quarters that came ta him as a mark of their ap preciatibn, were put in a box and given tq his mother for safe-keeping when instead of spending it In dissi pation and folly, he would buy some - thing useful with it And here lies . the secret of his material success. "He was generous, kind and char itable.when a boy, always taking the : part of, and being kind to, the1 boy that was! smaller than himself: and t I i i i in ms manhood no poor s person ever appealed to him in vain. He took a real delight in helpingithe needy. His mother was very dear io mm, auu in ner oia -age sne was the special object of his affection and ' fullest, finest characters the State has ever produced. . j ; "Wheij he purchased and becam the editor of the Noi th Carolinian at -Fayettelle, some years i before th war, such was the character he had made for) honest)', for fair dealin and goodj judgment, that that vet ran editor, E. J. Hale, of the Fay ettevilfe Ub?erverf . though opposite m politico, became his fast friend and remained so up to the time o: hisdeath.1 E. A. Yates." An Anaconda in the Streets of New York City. From the New York Sun we learn that a veritable anaconda made its appearance in that city a lew days ajro. It came out of the man hole of a sewer near the corner of First just as close by street and Second avenue one of the public schools was letting out, and the st eet was lined with several hundred children, who. on seeing the immense snake, ran and shrieked, one of them crying but: "Look out lor the crocodile. Their cries brought numerous grown neonle uoon the street, who followed the snake as it slowly made its way up -the street. The approach of the crowd caused his snake.shib to stop and coil with its head about three feet from the ground, when a well directed blow from a club laid it out and it was soon! killed. It proved to be a irenuine anaconda, nine feet kong and twelve inches in circum ference. ! How this snake got to the city is a'mvstcry. It is supposed though that it came froiii some South Amer ican vessel unloading ;at an east river dock, and got into the sewer and by that means reached the place where it came upon the street. Winston Sentinel: Hoes are dying in large numbers in Davie county from cholera. Another large crowd of hands passed through the city last week to work on the Jloan- oke cc southern. uen. J imes M. each, of Lexington, ex-Gongress- man and a widely known politician, is lying critically ill at his home; in Lexington.- A bold robbery was committed in Mt. Airy one night ast week by Walter Sheltbn and Tom MciirideJ who lorced an en trance into Mr. J. It. Pacidison's store. The; police discovered some- thing wrong as! he was pas: the tore, homeward bound, and quietly called to - his assistance a lew nlen who at once surrounded the build- ng and succeeded in capturing the former with several articles on his person, while the latter succeeded in making good his escape. Wilmington iMewitqer: Another car load of Italians passed this city ast night eii route to Charleston, where they are to j be employed in the phosphate quarries. This is the ourth car load of these people that have passed through Win for the phosphate quarries within ten days. I AVortli Knowing Mr. V. H. Morgan, merchant, L like City, r la., was taken with a severe cold, attended with a distressing cough and running into consumption in its first stages. Jle tried manv so-called popular cough remedies and steadily grew worse. Was reduced in flesh, had ditiicultv in breathing and was ;lnable to sleep. Finally tried Dr. King's New Iiscov-l erv for Consumption and found immediate'; rehet, and after using about halt a dtkzen bot- ties found himself well and has had no re turn of the disease.
