the fact that many may be caused

A! letter has been p
hands from an extensive manufac
turer of hubs, spokes, etc., in which
inquiry is made as to whether there
is suitable, timber in tliis-section for
his business. To his inquiry we are
prepared to answer inj the affirma
tive. A survey was made of the
New Hope section, about five miles
south of Durham, in 1861, by a United
States officer, who reported the tim
ber to be excellent for the manufac
ture; of wagons.
It may - be that suitable timber
can be found even. nearer than this.
With so much raw material of su
perior character so close at hand,
why not start a wagon factory in
Durham? Perhaps the manufac
turer referred to abovej would join
our citizens in such an enterprise.
Will the Commonwealth Club take
hold of the matter and ascertain
what may be done ?

The Flower 3Iission. j
The ladies of the Y C T. U. met
yesterdayr afternoon and; perfected
tlie organization of the Flower Mis
sion. The town has been divided
into fifteen sections with a superin
tendent for j each section, who will
visit at once and frequently the sick
and destitute within the boundaries
of her territory, thoroughly acquaint
herself with their condition and
needs, and as far as the means of the
association and liberality of our citi
zens permit, at once relieve them.
They will within the next week
place in the hands of our business
men a card containing the name
and territory of each superintendent,
so that any applicant for charity may
be referred to the proper authority,
Good, but 3Ii-;ht be Better.
The Flower Mission was organized
at the meeting of the W.C.T. U., yes-
teruay aiternoon. rarticuiars are
given elsewhere in Tub Plant of to
day. So far so good, but we fear
this society does not go .far enough
to accomplish the greatest good. As
we understand it, only members of
the W. C. T. U., can join the Flower
Mission and therefore there is a lim
it to the number of workers. We
think a better plan is to unite all the
ladies of Durham in a Benevolent
Society entirely separate and apart
from any other organization. But
as this step was not ' taken, let our
people unite to assist , the Flower
Mission in the noble work it has
undertaken.

head was caught by some fixture of

suspended by head and heel he was
dragged many yards down the track.
