The New Year has commenced, tho old year with its joys, its p'casures; it troubles its toils and its disappoint ments lie behind us. Xew hopes urge us orr at lightening speed, experience, dear bought, perhaps blood stained v,-ith drops of agony, whispers caution. It would be well for us to listen to the signars of warning, to gather wisdom from past errors, but let them no prove stumbling blocks m our path way to; advancement: Let us keep ()iiT' Headlight burning, our lamp filled with oil, our reflectors bright, try to keep ever on the upward grade hands upon the throttle, whistle ready to give a timely warning, our breaks manned and in order that we may not get' wrecked. Let the dead past bo forgotten, and instead of useless re- pinings and vain regrets, let u go on ward, upward. The lights of our Pe pot is in tight, and soon we'll reach our destination, disembark and change car3 we hope for a better, fairer land. With this issue the Ekapu&ht ea ters upon a New Tear, ar.4 ia the fu ture, as in the pas, we will be found trying to the bcs4 of our ability to per form the arduous tasks we hare as sumed. We shall always condemn wrong wherever found without fear or hope of reward, yet, we will do so in a candid, open maaer; we shall re main trite to the prnciples we hive from day to day enunciated, upheld and defended ; and we would ciUl upon our people to hold up our hauds that -wo-faint not; for their cause, i our cause, their interest our interest and their country ou country. Tkea let . us gird on anew our armor tor the cou fiicts during the . present year. With a happy Xtic Ymr to all without ex ception we enter upon our duties. o NEW YEAS. The beginning oi a new your is cele brated by all civilized nations at a time when nature is wrapt in deepest win ter sleep, wnen jno eanu is cuveieu with the snowy shroud. However, there is the instinctive feeling that under this deathly pallor new life is preparing, to spring forth, the germs are waiting the kiss of the sun's life- -parent dissolution reawakened, renew 'ed and rejuvenated nature will shout forth tin Hallelujah of Resurrection. ' Death contains the jerm of new life. Winter womb the fruition of spring, and in the midst of apparent lifeles hess we hail the advent of the new birth. The first of J anuary marks the beginning of the new civil vear. Mav it be one of plenty, of prosperity, of a higher life of morality, of greater as piration for deeds that outlast our brief existence on earth ; may it bless the eforts cf all those who work devoted ly and zealously for a higher humanity, the cementing of the human brother hood. So mote it be ! . ojste -5te-a.:r. ago. Whit stars have faded from ouf sky, What hope unfolded but to die! What dream so fondly pondered o'er, Forever lost the hues they wore ! How like a death bell, sad and slow, Tolls through the soul, "one year ago !" Where is the face we loved vo greet," The form that graced the fireside seat, The gentle smile, the winning way, : That bless'd our life-path day by day ? Where fled those accents, soft aud low. That thrilled our hearts "one year ago?" Ah! vacant is the fireside chair, ; The smile that, won no longer there;: From doorand hall from porch aud lawn, The echo, of that voice is gone; And, wo who linger only know How much we lost "out year ago!" But why repine ? A few more years A few more broken sighs and tears, And we, enlisted with the de.id, Shall follow where her steps have led . To that far world rejoicing go, Towhich she passed "oue year ago.' OH, SO HOMELY. The ' CiiAiois of Florida's Daugh ters Cruel y Pencilled. Some days ago. while on our way to Richmond, Va., we have had the pleas ure of making the acquaintaace of a Mr. Worthiugtou, a traveling corres pondent of the Chicago Times, who was homeward bound from a short Florida sketching expedition. He con versed very freely about certain, ad ventures lie met with, gave me highly interesting recounts about Florida, and last but not least about its women hi general. Said he: "I am unable to account for why there is such an oppressive numerosity of homely women about Jacksonville I went there for an original and im partial investigation, and can only state the awful fact. There is a saddening abundance of rich dresses and homely faces on the streets of Jacksonville It is nice to 9ee ladies dressed in fluffy white and other fairylike summer goods at this season, or it would be if the face and form were in harmony with the goods, but when fleezj gauze drapes bony anatomy, oue cannot but feel that there ii something wrong in the first circles. And there are such crowds of them on the streets and oh so homely ! They do not cry aloud or utter their sorrow in the streets, and yet 1 just know that their faces ache and that they have to get up of ight to rest their features. The ycunsr fellow about town told me that the season is over and the pretty women have left for the North ; that these I saw wore the superfluous virgins of New Knglard some of them are there because they have invested in orange groves and the like, others because they have outlived their chances in Newport and Long Branch, and settled there for a green eld aze from thirty forward. And they are so pathetically plain not d formed or scarred, but just plain. cannot forbear a description of one whom i ecountered three times a day, she is such a study in gothic arehitec ture and mediaeval ruias. All tho same she owns a rine plantation and is greatly addicted to plum colored silk and alligrstor jewelry. She is about as tall as I am, and presests about the same "voluptuous swell" of person that is to say, a ring fitted tight under her arms would slide even to her heels and touch all the r ay, and a straight edge from her chin to her toes would "justify," as printeis say. Yet she is smart and witty, and when she enters the diningroom slie glides over the floor us gracefully "as a suratch-awl jerked across a pine board by a muscu lar carpenter. I was told that it is rather a hard climstte on women of a certain temper ament those ia whom there is a ten dency to ovoraction,. whether in nerves or circulation. Small and agile bru nettes of a sensitive organization i ften lose lieh rapidly in getting acclimated. On the other hand, large and placid women, or, iu general, women of a slightly lazy disposition, enjoy life amazingly. No.v this is what nuuy old residents say the truth of it I cannot vouch for. They say tiiat young wo men of nervous' activity," full of chat and movement, enjoy the climate too much : their life and vivacity are truly charming, but in tiinn come reaction and languor. Says a young New York er of my acquaintance, 'I have seen a man come there with a grown daugh ter and stay three or four years, and when they went home vou'd have sworn sha was his raother.' If this report should keep any ladies of the susceptki ble temperament from going to Florida, I can only say I am sorry for the hotel people, but I have done my duty. Youth and beauty are the most preci ous of all cartkly possessions too precious to be risked for such a tine as a winter in Florida." Here the train rolled into Richmond ar.d the steady voice of Capt. Scott's "changed . cars for the Chesapeako A Ohio," made me aware that I had to part with my newly made acquaintance. We must confess, tliat this is rather tough on the women of Florida and hope tho day is not far distant when that brute of a scribe will get his eyes scratched out "for his uugentlemaly iusinuations. Fcav men come lip to their'1 highest measure of success. Some fail through timidity, or lack of nerve. They are unwilling to take the risks incident to life, and fail through fear in ventur ing on ordinary duties. They lack pluck. Others fall through imprud ence, lack discretion, care of sound judgement. They overestimste the future, and build air castles, and ven ture beyoBd their depth,' and fail and fall Others, again, fail through lack of application and perseverance. They being with good resolves, but soon get tired of that, and want change, think ing th. y can do much better at some thing else. Thus they fritter life awav, and' succeed at nothing. Others waste time aud money, and fail for want of economy. Many fail through ruinous habits; tobacco, whiskey, and peer spoil them for business, drive their best customers from them, and scatter their prospects of success. Some fail for want of brains, education, and fit ness for their calling, they lack a knowledge of human nature and of the motives that actuate men. They have not qualified themselves for their occu pation by practical education. Ex. Mr. S. L. Hart, Jr., the polite and gentlemanly Proprietor oi this popular note!, has refurnisned it witii 'untnely new ftttniture recently. Every room has been newly carpeted with fine Brus sels carpet. The old furniture has been replaced with elegant Walnut. The Toilet cases and bureaus have fine French plate Mirror's. The beds are all supplied with the finest hair mat tresses, and everything is fitted up m the most elegant style. Mr. hart showed us over the House a few davs , ago, and we were utterly surprised at the elegance and magnificence of the furniture, etc. Everything wan neat clean, and in perfect order, and showed that Mr. Hart was a model hotelist. We say without hesitation that it is the most comfortable, most elcgantlv furnished, and best kept hotel in the State. The table is furnished with the very best, and not a single com plaint has ever been heard in that di rection. The people of Rocky Mount are proud of their hotel, and justly so, too. Long may it stand and continue to prosper aud improye, under its pres ent management. f. PKILAPCIPWA. Frio. GNEIbllar Ttt inJoaUy of tk UIs of fee h tun an body atifie &oux a diseased Liver.
