Like water and oil these I wo parties cannot lie made t mix. Their platforms are too widely ditlerent and tin? classes ar rayed in either party have no love for v:-Ai other. The leaders have fonii"d the unholy alliance the rank and tile of the parties have not, nor will they ly the time the election comes off, on the contrary with each day the iilf be tween them widens. There rs no common "round, in the iir-t place, for them to stand upon, and therefore neither party will support the ticket packed up by the leader.-. We can see very dearly how the fusion was brought about. The leaders want the oiiic- ii' po.--i!i!e and are willing to divide the spoil if by cjoiug they can ret them. They are willing to sacritiec principle for the sake of get !in; into o'lice, but they will ti m I that the rank and file are not willl iijlT to .-acritice their views for the sake of putting :i few men in (.(lice. TI:ey are just as hit terwe mean the respectable class --as Democrats airainst such a pol icy and hence they will not support the mongrel ticket. The leaders of the l'opuli.-t. party will find out that they made a I ir mistake when they fused with the Kads in this county. We are not surprised at the Uads :igreeiug to the fuse act as the re spectable people of this county and Suite have long since been disgust ed with and repudiated them. This fusion act that the leaders have con-ummated has shown them up in their true colors to the rank and tile and they are unwilling to long er follow such leadership, and they are acting the nohle and manly thing to openly denounce the un holy alliance and cut loose from such a political deal. PEJIOCIt ATIC CAMPAIGN CLI PS. Under the management of Col. Julian S. Chit, as president, and Mr. B. C. lieckwith, as secretary, the Democratic Clubs of North Carolina will lie important factors in the interest of Democracy in the State. The value of organization all will concede, and while we do not have the least fear that the Democrats will not carry the State, yet the Democratic forces cannot be too well organized. We do not want to lie satisfied with a small majority, but we want to make it an overwhelmingly large one. And all organizations are a help to this end. These clubs scat tered all over the State keep the tires of Democracy burning and stimulate the faint hearted and in different. Clubs of this character do a work that cannot be done in any other way. They are composed of the people and therefore they feel more than ever the interest of their per sonal ell'ovt in the work of promot ing I Kaiiocraey. The dul) idea is on the right line, read the work should be push ed until its membership shall be found in every town and hamlet in the State. Cotton skf. i bring in the T.ir minghani (Ala.) market :2." cents a hu-liel. There are thirty-two pounds to the bu-hel and sixty-two bushels to the ton. This makes the market price of cotton seed ".."' a ton. Not many years ago the planter thought the seed of cot ton were a nuisance, and would have been glad to raise cotton with out the seed. Then it was found that oil could be made of them, and their price now reduces largely the cost of raising cotton. Tin: Wilmington Star, the old-e-t daily paper in the State, is twenty-seven years old. It cele brated this event last Sunday, by a permanent enlargement to eight columns, which makes it the cheap est daily paper of its size in the State. It is a most valuable ex change, interestingly gotten up and a model of neatness in typog raphy. AVe wish it continued suc- Tin: sudden and untimely demise of He v. De ceased was in his 44th year. National Capital Mat tors. Fruui our Ili'Kular Corivsiiondout. Washington, D. C, Sept. 22, IS'.U. A quorum of the cabinet have been in Washington this week, but not all at one time. Secretary Smith was only in town three days and Secreta ry Lamont Las just arrived. , Secre taries Greshain and Herbert have been at their desks all the week and Secretary Carlisle has not been able to get even a three-day vacation since Congress adjourned. There is considerable gossip here over the probability of Secretary Lamont be ing nominated for Goverlior of New York by the Democrats, although he isn't saying a word himself. There is no doubt that Secretary Lamont would make a strong candidate perhaps stronger than any man who has been mentioned in connection with the nomination, except ex-Secretary Whitney, and the impression is that he will not accept because, like Whitney, he would be accepta ble to the two factions into which the party in New York is unfortu nately divided, he having managed to keep the good will of them all. Democrats here recognize the nomi nation of Mr. Morton to have been about the strongest that the Repub licans could have made, and they be lieve that a very strong Democrat will be needed to beat him, under ex isting circumstances. Senator Faulkner has decided that he can be of more benefit to the par ty by giving his undivided attention to managing the Congressional cam paign committee, of which he is chairman, than by going on the stump; consequently he will make no speeches, but will remain con stantly at the committee headquar ters. He sent President Cleveland a copy of the campaign Text Book, this week, with the compliments of the committee. Although no ofticial announcement has been made to that effect, and none is expected, it has been under stood for some time that Treasury officials regarded women a failure as high grade clerks in that department; consequently there was little surprise when it was learned that a considera ble percentage of the hundred-odd clerks dismissed thus far in the re organization of that department, now under way in accordance with a law enacted at the last session of Con gress, were high grade women clerks. There are more high grade women clerks that is women drawing more than $1200 a year in the Treasury than in any other department, and, according to statements of those over them, there are numerous rea sons why men are preferred to them. It is said no more women will be ap pointed to or promoted to any clerk ship above the $1200 grade in the Treasury department. Although it is strictly a matter of business, those who have been dismissed are raising as great a howl as though they had been deprived of something in which they had a proprietary interest, and the howl is likely to increase in vol ume as soon as those who are trying to get reinstated become convinced that they cannot succeed. One of the best campaign docu ments sent out by the Democratic Campaign Committee is a list of the new enterprises inaugurated and of old ones which have resumed work since the new tariff became a law. It answers better than pages of argu ment could possibly do the Republi can charge that tariff reform would injure American industries. The general but gradual revival of business is making itself felt in the Treasury by the heavy demand for small notes of the denominations of ones and twos. Money of this class is in great demand in the South and Southwest specially. While the Treasur- is doing its utmost to ac commodate all who ask for small money, it cannot always supply all orders as promptly as desired. Pre ference is given to orders when gold is deposited for small notes, as it is the policy for the Treasury to build up its gold reserve by all legitimate means. Senator William M. Stewart, of Nevada, who is made co-respondent in a suit for divorce brought into the courts of the District of Columbia by a North Carolinian named Charles L. Glascock, against his wife, nee Carrie Brady, of Iredell county, North Car olina, filed in court to-day voluminous affidavits setting forth that the case is one of conspiracy to blackmail, and that the plaintiff and respondent have continued to reside together as husband and wife after the suit was filed. The contested nomination of Cheat ham vs. White, both colored, in the Second North Carolina district, was heard by the Republican Congression al Committee to-day, and the decis ion made late this evening, is in favor of Cheatham. White now agrees to withdraw. The committee also de cided the contest for nomination from the Seventh South Carolina district between Ellery M. Bray ton and Johnson, in favor of the first named. There is more catarrh in this section of the country than all ether diseases put together and until the last few years was supposed to be incurable. For a great many years doctors pro nounced it a loeal disease, and prescrib ed local remedies, and ly constantly failing to cure with loeal treatment, pronounced it incurable. Science has proven catarrh to lie a constitutional disease and therefore requires constitu tional treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cure, manufactured bv F. J. Chenev & Co.. Toledo, Ohio, is the only constitutional cure on t lie market. It is taken inter nally in doses from 10 drops to a tea spoonful. It acts directly on the blood and mucous surfaces of the system. They offer one hundred dollars for anv case it fails to cure. Send for circulars and testimonials. Address F. J. CHENEY & CO., Toledo, O. fef Sold by Druggists 75e. How Thcv Live in Warren. Warri'iiton !!e'inl. Aycook Co. say they have pur chased (i.OOU pounds of home cured hams this year. The other merchants have also handled a" great many of them which shows that our fanners have adopted the--hog and hominy theory, which is the basis of all agri cultural prosperity. It is said that there are two or three times as many more hogs in the county this year, than last year. This means an abun dance of meatt and no more buying of the swill fed, coarsegrained West ern meat. In addition, we have the best and largest corn crop we have had for many years, so that the hogs can be well fed. How different our condi tion would be to-day, if we had been farming upon this system for the past twenty years. Instead of grum bling, we do not know but that we ought to be thankful for the low price of cotton, which has brought about this condition of affairs, for the inde pendence of the farmer depends upon an abundance of home made supplies. Her Love Letter Came Pack. In September, 18(52, on the battle field of South Mountain, Md., John Tyler of Company B. Forty-fifth Regiment. P. V. V., took from the pocket of a dead Confederate soldier a love letter dated July H. 1S:!2, writ ten to the latter bv his afiiancee, who then lived in Richmond county, N. C, and who signed herself "Kate." It enclosed a lock of her hair. Mr. Tyler carefully preserved the letter, and has long been trying to find the writer. A copy of it was recently sent to the Governor of North Carolina, who caused it to be published in the local papers. This found the writer '"Kate," who is now a widow, and lives at Riverton, N. C, and who has written to Mr. Ty ler. Last Monday, the latter return ed the long lost love letter and lock of hair by mail to the address of Mrs. A. C. McNeill, Riverton, N. C.
