The oldsboro Star, Saturday, March 18, 1882. The population of Goldsboro is 3,286. See advertisement of flanff & Son elsewhere. The Liooolnton Progreu, we learn, has suspended, and is for sale. If yon want fresh groceries, go to Mr. J. P. Dobson's Store on East Center street. Robert S. French, an eminent lawyer and jurist, of the Wilmington bar, is dead. The Big Fonr Minstrels, it is rumored, will appear at the Messenger Opera House on the 27tb. ,V , ; The Goldsboro band praolices nearly every night, and plays equal to the best bands in the State. We call especial attention to the schedule of the W. & W. R. R. Co., in another column. If you want good groceries at a small price, call on Mr. Joseph Peterson, Wal nut Street, near Centennial pump. The oolored oitizens of Wayne oounty should not forget the county mass con vention at Goldsboro on the 25th inst. The hands on the Midland Railroad are busy laying the track. Our Smitbfield friends will soon hear the noise of the iron horse. Mr. W. H. Emanuel, junk dealer of Goldsboro, has shipped since first day of Janurary, 15,000 lbs of rags and 26,000 lbs of junk, and is still buying. Calves are dying in Meoklenburg county with hydrophobia, and mosquitoes in Newborn are passing away from earth to eternity with small-pox. We are informed that Maj. J. C. We have now dispensed with the paient outside, and will hearfter go the whole hog or none. The matter on our outside will consist of ohoioe miscellaneous selec tions, and the inside will be devoted to general and politioal news, and besides we will give to the readers of the Stab at least two oolnmns of local matter, always keeping abreast of the affairs in Wayne oounty and the State. After this issue we will be improved typographi cally, as it is our intention to add some new material to our offloe. By next fall we will have in oonneotion to our news paper department, a job office, where all kinds of printing in that line will be neatly executed. Gnilford oounty, says the Patriot, has the largest rooster in the State. It is a beautiful white bird, and measures four feet on a dead level. This certainly speaks well for the fowl family, but the fowlest thing we know of, is a mocking bird in Wayne county that measures nine feet in length and seven feet in width, and besides has four legs, four eyes, two heads and two bills, one of the bills being due in April for seventeen bushels of corn and a ton of hay which it devoured du ring the month of February. It is at present oaged in the To wn Hall at this place, but as soon as its owner, Mr. Byrd, gets suffloient lumber he will build a suitable house for this wonderful winged oreatnre of the air. Devotional services of the A. M. E. Z. Church will be held as follows : Preaching at eleven o'clock a. m., and half-past seven p. m., eash Sabbath. Class meeting from half-past three to half-past four o'clock ; preaching may follow. Preaohing each Wedueiday night at eight o'clock. Young people's prayer meeting each Thursday night at eight o'clock. Leaders' meeting Tuesday night before the first Sunday in eaoh month. Choir meets Monday and Friday nights. Sabbath sohool nine a. m., to ten o'clock and forty minutes a. m. Teachers' meeting eaoh month. J. H. Mattocks, Pastor. Deaths. Cur city was greatly shocked on Wednesday night, Maroh 8th, over the sudden death of our much loved and re spectable young townsman, Richard MoRae, wbioh ooourred about eight o'clook. Richard bad worked all day, and was in apparently good health. He was on his way home to supper in company with Ben Hogan and Willis Peel, when he suddenly fell baokward, and in a few minutes life was pronounoed extinct by Dr. W. H. H. Cobb. The fu neral servioes took plaoe on Friday after noon at the Baptist Churoh. He was an honest, upright and industrious young man, and all that knew him regrets his death. We chronicle in to-day's issue, the death of Mr. George Washington's mother, which ooourred on Friday night, Maroh 10th. This lady was endowed with the kindest feelings, and her loss will be re gretted by all who knew her. O Mubdeb in Wayne County. On Satur day night, Maroh 4th, about three miles west of LaGrange, on the plantation of Jno Isler, William Bridgers and Mack Le nair, two oolored men, cut Frank Best so severely that he died on Saturday night, the 11th inst. The Coroner, Dr. Geo. L Kirby, when notified of the fact, at once summoned a jury and an inqnest was held over the body of the deoeased, and the verdict was, that Frank Best came to his ueath from mortal wounds at the hands of William Bridgers and Mack Lenair. We are informed by Deputy Sheriff W. R. Parker, that there were several white men at the negro frolio where the stabbing oc curred, and that they, as well the oolored men, became intoxicated from wine whioh was purchased from the Lord of the Manor. If our farmers oontinue to deal out wine and other spirits to irresponsible parties at these low, mixed gatherings, we may expect nothing but all sorts of crime to be committed in Wayne county. The pages of onr criminal dooket has been recorded with the blackest orimes for the past six years. The prisoners, Bridgers and Lanier, are now ooufined in jail awaitiDg their trial.
