C: SATURDAY JULY 21, 1888. Lender the Canvas. If the eri tire State of.iorth Carolina had been searched from sea to moun tain no more suitable place for an encampment for the military of the State could have been touud than Seaside Park, on Wrightsville Sound. The Park includes about fifteen acres of grouud, a part of which is shaded by large oaks. The rest is open "ground, sloping gradually to the sound. In this beautiful grove the tents, &c, are stretched. The drilling and dress parades will take place-in the open Geld, which affords ample space for handling the troops. Within sight of the Park is the sea. Bath houses have beenj built on the Sound near camp lor the accommo dation of the encampment. Just acrss the Sound one mile is the fine hotel near the beach, built by the Seacoast Railroad Compa ny, which is now open to the pub lic. At an early hour this morning the encampment was opened with the usual ceremonies. . The read ing of orders, programmes, &c, clearly showed in the beginning that tlu boys were not to have a frolic or picnic; This.! calling to gether the troops means business, as it should. -Why call men from store and farm and shop -and office for a dozen days at largo expense unless some real good is to come from itt Through the courtesy of the officers in command your corres pondent obtained the official re ports of each regiment and compa ny, as follows: The First Regi ment, Col. Gotten commanding, has in camp seven .companies, numbering two hundred and- eigh ty six men. " . The Second Regiment, Col. W. C. Jones commanding, has five companies, numbering two huu dred and nineteen men. The Third Regiment, Col. J. D. Glenn commanding, has seven companies, numbering two hun dred and thirty-nine. Fourth Regiment, Col. J. T. An thony commanding, . has seven companies, numbering two hun dred and niuo men. From these figures you see there are nine hundred and fifty. three men. This does not include all of the officers and musicians. Large crowds witnessed the dress parade this afternoon, and expressed themselves as being proud of our State Guard, and well they may be, for finer look ing, better drilled soldiers would be hard to find. Brevet Lieutenant Col. Carl A. Woodruff, jM Artillery, of the United States Army, detailed to visit and inspect our troops, is here, the guest of head quarters. He expressed himself as highly pleased with our military. Cor. of the News Observer. -- - ' Accident to Capt.JJ Stuud wick. We greatly deplore an ac cident to Hon. F. N. Strudwick which came near terminating fa tally. From the Durham Recor der wo learn that on Tuesday night ho was riding in the suburbs' of Ilillsboro when his horse passed partly over a well which had some thin plank lying across the top. The horse and rider were precipi tated into the well, a distance of 30 feet, Mr. Strudwick falling first, theu the horse with his hind - feet first. The well is caved in at the bottom, so that it is not thought that the horse fell on him. At first Dr. Strudwick thought he was fatally injured, but we are re joiced that later accounts are reas suring and that he is tbdugbt out of danger. Raleigh Xetcs Observer. THE BANDANNA UNFURLED. LATEST NEWS. HY TGLEUKAI'II. He Died Game. Montecello, N. Y., July 20 Jack Allen was hung in the court house at 11.45 o'clock today for the murder of Ulsura Ulrich at Jeffer soiiville last October. Allen had an iron nerve and sang and prayed under the gallows in a strong clear voice. He asked for a glass of whiskey which was, refused him. He put the noose around his own neck and said "let her go . Gallag her." The sheriff then pulled the lever and Allen's body swung m the air. His pulse stopped" in 11 minutes and j. his heart ceased to beat in 12 j minutes. He was cut down after hanging 14J minutes. The body was then given to the un dertaker and interment took place in the potter's field immcdiatly after the execution. He was an English man 34 years of age, and came to this country j two years ago. He had no friends here and did not write to his English friends about his trouble. Sincehe has been in prison Allen had tried the insane and religious dodges in vain. - A Fracas at Matthews. Matthews, N. C, July 20 -This afternoon an intoxicated man named Hartis'insulted and attempt ed to throw down Mr. J. T. Morris who was I peaceably passing in front of him.
