I per sisted, however, and at length she re luctantly consented to send for tjic scribblings." I found them to consist of short stories ami several novels written at different intervals since she was a girl of fourteen. A short story, she in formed me in rather an amused man ner, written when she was fourteen, had been sent by her father to a paper and wasn't once published Upon reading her productions I found they displayed undoubted tal ent and a matured and finished stvle. I felt that it woujd be a shame "for such talent to be wasted and asked her if she would not like to have some of her writings published. She replied she thought not, any -war under her real name. I had" asked her if she couldn't write up the trip we had just taken. She at once an swered she was sure she could not, that she had never written an article or essay in her life. I urged her to try and the result was quite a fine ar ticle which was at once accepted by the Staunton Spectator, a leading Virginia paper. From that time she continued to write, and her articles, essays and short .stories were published in the Baltimore Catholic Mirror, Baltimore Sunday News, Baltimore American, New York Tablet, New York Free man's Journal, New York Catholic Review, the Home Magazine, Belford's Magazine, and have attracted wide notice and favorable comment from the press, and have been extensively copied. Miss Wight possesses quite a di versity of talent in writing, and what is quite remarkable in one so 3oung, writes fluently on theological subjects. One of her essays which appeared in the Catholic Mirror was especially commented upon bv his Fminon Cardinal Gibbons, who remarked he could not have handled the subieet better himself. Thousrh Miss Wicrht. can writenboth wittily and humor ously her greatest talent lies in pa thos and her best productions are of a pathetic tendency. 1 Miss. Wight was born in Baltimore and is the daughter of Jacob Howard Wight, a well known tobacco broker of that city. He is of English ex tractions, his ancestors having come over with Lord Baltimore. His mother was a Miss Howard of the well known Maryland family of How ards, and was a celebrated beauty in her youth.
