It is believed that he was in those il.ivs fin imricrlit anl useful citizen subscfiucrtly he eotered into other employment. The Fields disapieared from Chicago October 5, 1 889, two daws after the Millers left. The Field and Miller families be- came we)l ac(iuainted after the birth of Mrs. Miller's little daughter. M r. Field at that time was apparently about fifty years old. Mrs. Field was a dark brunette, and perhaps forty, She had then, and perhaps now, a sister named llliams living lnnVork will begin immediatelv at Evanston. When the Fields were leaving, they said they were moving to that suburb to reside, but they did not do so. . I It is next to certain that the hng- lish swindle in which Field and Miller have been engaged was planned at the Hotel Worth after the two fami- lies became intimate, and that Miller was the projector of the scheme and drew Field into it. It is certain, too, that the pair left Chicago expressly to nernetrate their swindle on the English public. That Miller was the prune mover in the enterprise will not be doubted when recalling his connection with a famous swindling scheme of a simi lar nature that, a few years ago, flourished in this city, netted its pro- moters several millions of dollars.and fin. illt- .0111.01 in o frncli thot wnc: t1ioCr8.tiC tlCKet. sensation of the year. This swindle was the "Fund W" fraud. No more gigantic or success ful swindling scheme rwas ever played in this country than this L.I? 1 Af-i' same The principles upon which the fraud was worked is the same as that which Field and Miller worked in London, namely, inducing persons with more money than sense to in vest their cash under promises of enormous profit, paying large divi dends lor a time out of the principal thus contributed b the fools, and then absconding with everything in sight when the situation begins to grow ticklish. The "Fund W" scheme was worked by the formation on paper of a num ber of bogus companies. One of these was called Fleming, Merriam and Company. When the exposure came, the Loring brothers, Fleming, and several lothers were arrested. At first the identity of Merriam was con cealed. Rut when the case came to trial, convictions were secured of several of the conspirators by the evidence given by Miller, who was then proved to be "Merriam" of the bogus firm. He had a complete knowledge of the methods used by the "Fund W" people and by securing immunity from punishment by! turning State's evidence, was able to turn his knowl- edge to good ud vantage by playing the same game on the unsuspecting and gullible Englishmen. There were no developments yes terday in the case of M rs. Cornelia V. E Miller and Mrs. Priscilla Field, who were arrested by the New York police at the Coleman House Satur day on advices from London that they were the wives of William Wads worth Miller and J. II.
