In common with all North Carolina editors we are sorry indeed at the death of Mr. McDiarrnid, of The Robe- sonian. All who knew the departed editor regarded him with favor and appreciated his many generous, sympathetic and manly qualities. Who will forget fais cheerful greeting and ringing 'laughter? A. bona fide case of a centenarian is reported from Petersburg, Va. Mrs. Mary E. Kerr, who died a the 4th inst;,. was 100 years old on the 8th f December; last. This is about the first trustworthy centenarian we have heard of jn some years. - On February 2rtd, the news from Cu ba was that there was hotV flgli'ting around Hayana, that Weyler forc ed to return to Havana to prevent ths Cubans from capturing that. city, that the inhabitants were badly frightened, and that Genp-rals Gomez and Rivera were preparing fo attack the bu'tcher. We have seen no eKnfirma4ion of all this. SOME REFLECTION'S FOR THE j PRESENT. The New York Journal paid $100 for a white man, well educated, who in great desperation sold . himself. The Journal put this "accomplished" but great'y distressed citizen to a 'work In the streets pf New York to hunt up those who were ib a worse condition than he -vvas, and that i row the occu pation 'of this white slave. jpdr, gifted fellow had in vain sought work. He found 177,000 destitute people In the great city. This is an awful' picture and shoe's that fli return of prosperity in fact and not in .newspapers is""a very great thing .to be desired. It 4 also said thaJjn Chicago there are 70,000 de pendent upon charljy, 1 What a picture! What a commentary upn,jhe boasted good times and abundant money. While 'a few hundred thousands thear are millions in distress, and even jin extreme poverty. And this too in the .greatest republic of the wort4.- All over our land in all cities the very ptwr abound.. There are sufficient causes for all this tramping and suffering and squalor and ppyerty and despair. We see.it given out thkt now 3,000,000 peo ple in our land are clae as "desti tute." Why this? Th Nashyae Sun says: "God has bless4 the land, but man has brought a curse jippn it. Riches have been piled up mountain high in the hands of a very few, and millions who live by toil are made to suffer. The man who sows not permitted to reap the fruits of bia indssry and toil. Spec ulators and money-chngef combine against him and force his prodei out .of his hands . without leaving hie? margin for profits, and in iurs with hold them from the markets until the pH;?s are forced up on the consumers, thus fobbing i.He producer of his profits and exacting from the consumer more than he shotfjd pay." ' Would to Go4 there were signs of re turning prosperity, and that the mil lions of poor might fin4 work to earn their bread. There are poverty and dis tress broad cast and he has no eyes to see or read who feas not found it out. I Our able Nashville j contemporary finds links in the chain ot depression and bovetty, beginning with the farm ers and ending with skilled labor, The Intervening Jinks are the retail mer chant, wholesale merchant. Jobber an? manufacturer. Here. is , what" is' said and it is true as all business and re flecting men must see: " J "The first link is the farmer. If he cannot get a profit on his products he cannot buy and consume manufactured goods beyond the barest necessities. "The retail merchant is the next link. Unless the farmer can buy and pay for his merchandise his business is ruined, and he cannot buy of the wholesale merchant. The wholesale merchant is the next link, and when he cannot sell to the re tailer he cannot buy of the Jobber. The Jobber is the next link, and when he cannot sell to the wholesaler he can not buy of the manufacturer. "The manufacturer is the next link, and if he cannot sell to the Jobber he is compelled to stop manufacturing and dismiss the laborers who do his work. "The skilled laborer is the last link that completes this endless chain, and he is linked with the laborer and the farmer on one hand and the manufac turer on the other, and if he cannot get work from the manufacturer he cannot buy and pay for the products of the farmer, and thus in pulling the farmer down the whole fabric tum bles." If all these classes are sufferers the whole nation is sick. When the foun dation Is unsound the building is at ways in danger. If the farmers of our country are unprosperous, afflicted, bur dened, with junremunerative product how can the - merchants and other classes prosper. Every thing , produced upon the farm is lower except wheat than they were in October. "How can people buy whs-n there is no money? How can trades people and the toilers flourish with wasted farms and low or falling prices of farm products? There will be no genuine, permanent prosperity again until the prices of farm products are satisfactory and ample. Not until then will the trades flourish and the great laboring classes find constant work at fair wages. Whatever robs the farm ers and. oppresses the farmers is injury ing all other classes except bond hold e-ri and the rich. Better prices will come with more money, with an ample currency." Constriction means poverty and low prices. The politicians and moneyed men who seek to reduce the currency are as great enemies to pub lie prosperity as the Sam Jpnes sort who oppose public education are ene mies to an intelligent voting population and , consequently to a safe and sound system of government. The Sun says wisely, tersely, well: "Charitv is not a remedy for poverty it is only a very slight alleviation of its pangs. t, "Work, regular and fairly profitable work, is the only true remeay ror pov erty. "f!tntralized wealth in its greed rtpatroviner Individuality, absorbing all natural advantages and heaping up burdens on the people which they can not, and after awhile, will not bear."
