" The strawberry season just erided has witnessed the greatest movement of berrfes since our truck growers began to rai'se them for the northern markets. The shipments have been about 165,000 crates. In 1896, the shipments were 110,000 crates and in 1895 70,000. In two " years the shipments have more than f doubled. Drowned ia the Cape Fear. The Hemenway School Building Destroyed by an Incendiary This 3Iorning--A Great Ioss to the City. ' " An alarm of fire was sent Ins this morning at' 1:50 o'clock upon the dis covery that the' Hemenway sohotol building on Fifth street, ' between Chtestnt and Grace streets; Was on fire, The : fire appeared to break out from the basement and jt is certain that an incendiary set fire to the property," as the school closed last ' Tuesday ' night and there has. been no fire lh the building for, 'some time. It is reported that two -explosions were heard and it is probable that the building was dy namltedl It" is also said the odor of kerosene oil .was smelled clear across the street. . " The building, a large two story struc ture with a splendid hall containing 600 opera Seats a nice school library and the" school equipments, were de stroyed. The loss will be about $17,000. The property belongs to the county and. is insured for about $12,000. The policies are in' companies representied by Messrs. J. W. Atkinson & ' Son, J. ' H. Boatwright & Son, F. H. Stedmah, Dr. W. W. Harriss, W. W. Hodgess, Wil lard & Giles and Walker Taylor. After ttt was discovered that.it was Impossible to save the building, th fire department used Its efforts in sav ing adjoining property. The depart ment was greatly crippled. In not hav 4ng, the services of the' Wilmingtom Steam' Fire Engine Company and Fifth rward Hook and , Ia)dder Com pany, which recently withdrew from the department on account of the d1 crease of the appropriation.' The fire burned so rapidly thalt th building was falling in at 3:00 o'clock. The teachers and pupils who h'aol come out watched the - destructive work of the flames. - THE UNIVERSITY CATAIiOGUE. The Institution Now has Forty-Seven Pro cessors and Instrnctors and 549 Students Marked Growth. in Every Department. The North Carolina university cata- logue for 1807 shows marked growth in every department of the institution. One hundred and ten courses in four teen departments are offered. The col lege, has 307 students, the medical school 34 and the summer school 158, making a total, less duplicates.of 549, taught by 47 professors and instructors. This is the largest attendance since 1851. :- . ' y , . ,.' Women are admitted to all graduate courses. The department of pharmacy will be ready for work in September for next session. Free, tuition is of fered to teachers and candidates ' for the ministry. - Seventy-six endowed scholarships are given to needy boys of talent and character. Wood's, 103 Market street. - Justice John. J. Fowler's Court. Inv Justice John J. Fowler's court yesterday Joseph Anderson, the color ed policeman, was charged with as sault and battery on R. Lilting. It appears- that a little after midnight on Thursday night the policeman accost ed a number of young men who had been singing in a toud voice and ad monished them to stop it. Mr. R. X. King was In the party and -according to the testimony, approached the offl- cer and s'ald: 'Triend; let m'e ask you somethlrng?" The policeman thereupon shoved him and he staggered and would have fallen 'had it not been for a tree behind him. Then one of thfe party asked Anderson why he struck King, and Ms reply was, "I will strike any one whb puts his face in mine when I am speaking Ito another.' The court held that the policeman, was guilty of assault and battery, and fined him $10 and the costs. Ttoei suit originated be fore Justice J. M. C, ait tending the southern meet of the Na tional circuit, returned home yesterday and was greeted by his many friends. It will be remembered 'that Mr. Tur renitine won In one of the races at Charlotte, and. that at Rock Hill he entered as an. amateur and came out third, against the famous professional riders of the sbuthT Schade and Hal stead. Frye, one of Tennessee's most prominent lawyers, died suddenly this" afternoon of apoplexy.
