A Wonderful Girl Preacher, v 'A series of meetings have been going on three weeks In out city under the auspices of our colored churches. Tbe services have been conducted by Clar etta Nora Avery, a young colored girl of only 11 years of jage, .Whose preach ing has been , marvel to1 all yrbto have heard her. She talks well uses good language, is remarkably familiar with scripture, and Is a fluent, Inpresslve speaker. The fact Is there is an im press! Veiiess aiM force about her dis courses that i is almost . supernatural. Her preaching has the most astonish ing effect, upon her hearers and both colored and white people are flocking to the various churches where she don ducts the meetings. This wonderful girl preacher .was horn in Washington, D. C, hut has lived a portion of her life at. 0lumlbla, S. C They tell us that she only at tended school three days on three dif ferent occasions, as her health would not permit her o go to school. So all of her intelligence and force Is natural. It is said she was converted when 18 months of .age, and 'began o preach when she was 7 years of age. She has preached in many of the large cities of the south and north, includingCSTew York and Boston. She has been preach ing here for three weeks, and since that time more than a hundred souls have decided to live for Christ 'through the power of her preaching. Friday night she preached at (Christ Congregational . church to a large au dience of tooth white and colored peo ple, and entertained 'them for an hour or more. Th'e services opened with singing, after which she made an ef fective prayer. iShe then read a scrip tural lesson and preached a remark able sermon on "Grace." She pro nounces -distinctly, and' her sentences were well rounded. - , ' She will preach at Christ Congrega tional church this morning at 11 a. no. and 8 p. m., land at Carolina' Beach at 3 p. m. She leaves ,'here CMonday for Philadelphia, twhere she has an en gagement with a white church. Today's! Messenger. We think We are justified in sayhig that today's issue of The Messenger" is - one that Wilmington has every reason to be proud of. It Is a twelve-page paper full of interesting maitjter; in cluding a vast aimount of matter espe cially prepared for this edition. Among the articles written for us is one entitled "Pirates of Carolina," an exceedingly interesting sketch by Mr. W. C. Allen, of Wilson. Our Raleigh correspondent aliso has a page of interesting extracts tfrom the correspondence of North Carolina's fa mous War governor, . the immortal Vance. A threatening, heavy, black cloud pass ed over the city yesterday afternoon about 3:30 o'clock, but spent itself in loud peals of .thunder and vicious flashes of light ning, but there was not enough rain to wet the ground. Lightning struck the telephone wires and burnt out a. number of 'phones. .On Wrightsville beach about the 'same hour there was a tremendous rain, lasting a half hour and accompanied by hail. There was also a very high tide. The rain fell as far this way as the Mason boro turnpike. The steamer Wilmington was on her way tp the city from Carolina Beach, and Captain Harper states that he never be fore experienced such rough weather on the river. The wind blew furiously and there were big seas on. A heavy rain and windstorm is reported from along the Wilmington and Weldon railroad from Mt.jDlive nearly to the city. Signs of Prosperity In Wilmington. Ex-Mayor S. H. Fishblate tells us that his clothing trade has been large and more satisfactory this spring than at any time since the spring of 189S. He says there has been more cash afloat, and this he attributes to the fact that Wilmington has become a great trucking centre. He declares that the wonderful growth of the trucking Industry heredbouts makes Wil mington one of the very best points in xne soutn. lie states tnere nas been a gradual but steady Improvement In busi ness, and points to the marked improve ment made to numerous business houses, to the large number of handsome resi dences going up all over the city, to the erection of a fine hotel on Wrlghtsvllle Beach, and to '. the large increase of de posits as shown by the bank statements, as an Indication of the prosperity of our city. He asserts that the man who can not see that Wilmington is making good progress and who croaks about dull times, hasn't got his eyes open and Is away be hind the times.
