Mary K. Sherman, chairman of the department of conTersation. Gen eral Federation of Women's Clubs, reports the establishment of a park oy club women of Florida for the pre servation of natural resources and recreational and educational purposes. This, the only state park ownel by club women and the only park of Its kind In the United States, was dedi cated November 23. 1916. by Mrs. W. 8. Jennings, president, in . these words: "With the power In me vest ed as president of the Florida Federa tion of Women Clubs. I hereby dedi cate the Royal Palm park to the peo ple of Florida and their children for ever." The park is in thq southeastern peninsular of Florida, tbe Everglade region. Dy reason of its location it has never, been overrun by fire and it represents In Its vegetation the growth of centuries. Charles T. Simpson, the engineer and sblentist, declared. 'I have been in Honduras, all over the western half of Cuba, the entire Island of Jamaica. Haiti and practically all over tbe wanner parts of Florida, but never have I seen else where such an Ideally glorious view of tropical vegetation." There have been found 241 varieties of plants in the park, more than 50 kinds of trees and the royal palms are particularly magnificent, some of them rising to a height of 100 feet. It Is also a bird. flower and wild life sanctuary. Royal Palm park Is on tbe proposed Dixie highway from Michigan tb Flor ida. The last 78 miles of this road is under construction from Miami to Cape Sabfe, under tbe name of the "Ingraham Highway.- The roadside planting along the highway where it runs through the park will be in roy; al palms and yellow flowering shrubs, to carry out the Florida federation color, of green and. gold. The chairman of Royal Palm State park is Mrs. John Gifford. who 20 years ago introduced the resolution in the general federation creating the conservation department. The move ment for the park was .begun in 1909. In 1913. the state legislature granted tbe federation 960 acres for park pur poses and Mrs. Fhagler added to this an endowment of 960 acres. The federation, while working for a state appropriation for caring for the park.- is defraying the expenses by a popular dime subscriptioon move ment. - l4; mi e-'.sf gep-asii tul -sSpp as 1st t- O l KM pptlts pT'4 -o iCr:3-e cltoa Sip.p tJ. t Tp S ..! fv- 4 X .rfst-m, p.t7 IVpi t 'i I, ELECT OUTRiCT It IP 4 to .r -?
