In the Hustings Court this afternoou Mr. Wm. IvRoyall was fined $50 for prac ticing law without a revenue license. The case was tried by a jury who were asked by the prosecuting attor ney, Mr. Wyndham R. Meredith, to fix the fine at the minimum, as the case was to be a test case. An appeal was taken to the Supreme court, and in the event of that court - refusing to grant a writ of error, Mr. Royall will take the matter to the Federal Courts. .Mr. Royall agreed to all the facts pre sented to the jury by Mr. Meredith, and in his willingness to make up the test case, told the jury that he would not under any circumstances bring suit against them for finding a ver dict against him. Judge A. L. Hil lary, who was on the bench at the time, told Mr. Royall that he had no right to make anv such rpmnrk tn tho jury. .Q. Using the Ztomb at Lyons. Paris, Feb. 9. The police oflice at Lyons was considerably shattered early this morning by the explosion of two bombs which had been placed against the railing of the office by some unknown miscreants for the purpose of blowing up the building while a number of policemen were in it Simultaneously with the above outrage a bomb was exploded just outside of the police office at St. Etienne. Three policemen were wounded. Eight persons have been arrested in connection with the af fair. It is supposed that both acts were the works of Socialists, sympa thizers of the strikers, and was done in revenge for alleged harsh police measures against the strikers. It was an nounced at noon from the officers of the Corbin Banking Company in this city that the strike, so far as the Reading company was concerned, was at an end. This announcement was made immediately after a con ference between Henry Maxwell,who represents .the company here, and Mr. Putnam of the executive board of District Assemblv 49. After tho conference Mr. Putnam said that all danger of a strike on the Reading system had been avoided, and that the settlement effected had been sat isfactory. -He refused to state the terms of the settlement. JIurdercd Ris Brother. Scrantox, Par, Feb. 9. Late Monday night Barney Sullivan,aged 26, murdered his brother John, and attempted to murder his brother Thomas. Thomas and Barney got into an altercation when John came upon the scene and tried to pacify them. Barney in a fit of rage seized a heavy bar that .was on the door and rushing upon John struck him on the head, killing him instantly. Seeing what he had done Barney rushed at Thomas with a butcher Knne, but 1 the latter succeeded making his escape. ' in & Sugar Refinery more. for Balti- Baltimore Feb. 10. It is definitely ascertained that Baltimore is to have added to her diversified industries, a su gar refinery, which will be located at Curtis Biy. It was then discovered that she was blind. She was kindly cared for and sent to her home but little worse for her terrible ex perience. .v , Daring Robberies. Montreal, Feb. 9. A most dar ing gang of American crooks are in the city attending the carnival. At 6 o'clock last evening they smashed the plate glass window in a jewelry store and rifled the windows of $3,000 worth of diamonds and rings. They afterward repeated the operation at another jewelry store. This was done while the stores were crowded with people, but no arrests were made. ' i 1 Strike Sett ted. PiTTSBURO, Pa.. Feb. 9-The strike of 0,000 Monongahela river coal miners is practically settled and work will be resumed on nearly all the mines on the first, second and third pools tomorrow. The others will fall into line in a day or so, and by next Monday it is expected that all the mines will be again in order. B- Guilty as Indicted. Washington. Feb. 9. The trial of John L. West, colored, lately a clerk in the general land ofllco on tho; charge of house-breaking and assauld with intent to commit a rape on Mrs.l Mary J. Court right was shot four times and killed instantly, by Luke Short, a well known sporting roan of. this city. Courtright was president of a detec tive agency. Ind., and confessed to having been the murderer of the late John Parker; of this city. In response to a telegram ol inquiry from us, the editor rf the Richmond Daily Telegram says: Rihmond. Ind., Feb. lOth., 18S7. Editor MornInc News: No such ar rest or confession was made. A woman here a year ago, said Young. had com mitted a murder, but she had no proof ol it.
