Ind., Mareh 9.-The residents of Princeton and vicinity are much exercised over a phenom enon which occurred there Sunday. A severe rain storm began before day break, and when the citizens arose they found the earth covered to the depth of an inch with a yellow substance. The doctors and chemists have examined it. but varv in their nnnplneinna -IffoaVlw oil o.rVc UmT of some sent to a scientist at Indianapolis for analysis. Frank Bayer made a par tial analysis and says : . " The substanc possesses many of the characteristics ot sulpher, It is o! a pale yellow color, insoluble in water or alcohol, but fully soluble in oil or tur pentine ami bisulphide ot carbon. Only having a small quantity I could not make atuiler test. When allowed to crystal lize out of a solution ot bi-sulphide of carbon and placed under a miscroscope, it is found to consist of small round bod ies, which, magnified thirty diameters, have the appearance ot mustard seeds, and differ trom ordinary flour sulphur. "It is probably of volcanic origin and this is borne out by the recent discovery ot foreign products in this vicinity, sup posed to be eruptive bodies, Reports from various other quarters ot the district, yesterday, were to the ef fect that the phenomenon has been gen eral in the counties of Warrick, Spencer and Pike, Indicted for Jtlurder. Little Bock. Ark;. March 10. Andrew Hedgepath has been indicted for the murder of Ibeorge vyatkins The murder . occurred some weeks ago. Hedgepeth lived with Watkins and his wife on a farm near Yellville. He fell in love with Mrs. Watkins and she reciprocated his passion. Hedge peui anu watkins weui tu tuwu u- eether the other day, and Watkins has not been seen since. Mrs. Wat kins soon after disappeared, was trac ed to Fayetteville and arrested. She had driven a team of horses over lone ly roads hundreds of miles, camping out at night to avoid observation, ac companied only by a twelve-year old boy. Buggy Bacon. As several have made inquiries as to how to prevent my bacon from be coming buggy, I will state that I commence fattening my hogs about the first of September and kill them a little before Christmas, so I can cure it good by the first of March. I then take it down and immerse each piece in boiling . water: then take two pounds of black pepper finely ground, and pour on it in a tray three pints of good apple vinegar, stir it up togeth er and apply it to all the fleshy parts of the nieces; lay it on a bench; skin down, and let the paste juice soak in. all that it will. Then, after a short I . v i .... while, hang it up. and you need not fear the bugs; no need of sacks of any kind. It would be a good idea to have a smoke made,when the weath er is damp, at least once a week, ot take it out and sun it - occasional! v. to I prevent mould. Our bacon has been I fun 0f bugs every year until ye tried tnis remetiy, auu, uesiucs, ine vine gar and pepper imparts a good taste to the bacon. If any one desires to try it let him follow the directions strictly, and he miy rest assured that the bugs will do no harm. We hear farmers complaining sometlm.es that the rats gnaw holes in their bacon. Well, you can prevent that by ceiling above the bacon. I have never seen a rat yet that had magnetism enough in his feet to walk a celling with his feet up and his back.down.; Our Battle Sketches. North State. ' The Great lUvival at Frank lin. Ind.; Closed. Franklin, Ind., March -10. The great revival that began In our churches at the beginning of the new year closed on Sunday. The result has been wonderful, and never in the kji uui titjr i sutll lUWl- the Christian church, has labored for ten we;ks. and has united 235 to hb church. At the Presbyterian church Itev. E. M. McMillan has held services every morning and evening this vear. and 209 have connected themselves with that contrrecration. At the Bantist church, through the great efforts of the pastor. Itev. Albert Oerle. 101 have been taken into full member ship.. The colored churches have been holding similar! meetings and have united fifty. This makes a grand total of 808 during these meet mgs. Boblnson, agent of the Toledo, St. Louis and Kansas City Railroad and Express Company at Swayzee. ten miles west of here, is missing, and is supposed to have gone to Canada. He is short in nis accounts, and is charged with complicity in tho rob bery of a resident of Swayzee of $-300 last Saturday. Saint s lmong Sinners. . Detroit, March 10. Ten Latter day Saints from Idaho, who have been in the House ot Correction for six months, are expecting to be released to-morrow on writs ot habeas corpus. Each was sentenced for nine months, .receiving what is known as a cumulative sentence. It is now claimed that such sentence is unconstitutional, and the prisoners will probably be released. Mac- Rae. which took place at his residence in Fayetteville yesterday mornintng. Dr. Mac Rae, was in the 70th year of his age, and served as surgeon in North Carolina regiments during the Mexican and confederate wars. Wilmington Re view. Mr. T. E. Kerner has been confined to his bed for several days with bilious fever. Kernersville now has two pa pers and will soon have a third. Mr. Councill Brown, of Greensboro, has been employed as drummer by Brown, Sapp & Co,, of this place. Kernersville has eight resident ministers, besides having preaching from three others, non resi dents. 2eirs wul Farm. Friends of Thos L. Shields, of Meck lenburg, who was tried in this county about a year and a half ago, for murder ing Joseph G. Sitton, ot Mecklenburg, and seut to the penitentiary, are moving the Governor to secure his pardon. The itch and measles having broken up nearly all the schools in the county would seem to have performed their mis sion. But they are holding on.
