Negotiations were entered in to with Judge Gilmer who owns the property directly in front of the ex tention and with Capt. B. J. Gloucester fishing schooner Richards Lester, who were picked up al sea adrift in a dory, and who were landed at North Sydney, underwent adreadful experience. They were adrift on the ocean for over six days without a bite of food or drop of water. After trying all imaginable expedients to allay their thirst, Brown cut one of his arms in order that they might drink his blood. But the blood would not flow. They then gave up all hope of being rescued, but weie at last'picked up in a terribly exhausted condition by the bark Kate C. Maguire through his property. The Board had previously to this, however, en tered into a contract with Capt. Fish er in which ho agreed to pay $2,250 to the city if that extesion were made and in addition agreed to give all the intersecting streets over his property free, without charge. The Board after consuraatlng these contracts resolved to set aside $1,000 of this money to employ an extra street force, which should bo set to designs, jMrtsentedl by Mr. Woodrofle, before'them and will adopt some one of these in a few days. Good titles having been found to the. lot where the present 'building stands the new Building will be erected on this property. The Board directed the building to bo built, of brick and the class rooms to be on the ground floor. V'ATER WORKS. ' The Committee on this most im portant improvement have been cor responding with different persons and corporations with a view to get accu rate information on which to base a safe contract, but no plan has yet been matured. ' The Committee finds it a difficult and delicate matter to handle and requiring ..great care and caution to prevent a mistake In this vital matter. The Mayor has been author ized to employ an engineer to make a topographical survey of the city with a view to Water Works, Sewerage and Drainage. Five. hundred leet of new hose has been purchased for ,the Fire Engine and is now in use. - CITY LIGHTS. The Thompson Electric Light Com pany have been granted the privilege of making a plant in the City and run ing pipes, &c, and the agent ol the Company says the machinery for the purpose is on-the way, having been shipped a week ago. The Brush Light Company has also asked and obtained permission to make a plant and they, promise to be shedding radiance all aroud in a short while. Col. It will show too that we have increased rapidly in number since the Natfonal Census In 1880. The Board meets once a week, and sometimes oftener, in order toexpidite the good work and they seem deter mined to give the city a substantial and safe "boom that will last and increase, rather than an excitement for specu lation, which so often wrecks the city and Tuins the investors. The Board went into office but lit tle more than a month ago and the above showing indicates' that they have not been idle nor tardy.
