Sued for an Unpaid, Furniture II ill Her Unsuccessful otl. London, June 8,This afternoon, at Ihe Westminister; County Court, Lady Constance Howard, the daughter of the Earl of. Winchelsea and sister of the late Lord Maidstone, appeared to ajudgment summons at the instance of Mr.Quantrell, furniture dealer, of Wardour Oxford street. Judge Bailey asked the defendant if she was married, the defendant replied in the affirmative, but added that her father had stopped her allowance of 200 a year, and she was entirely dependent on her husband, who is the second son of the Earl of Effingham. In reply the solicitor for the plaintiff, Lady. Constance said it was true that she was a novelist and that she had written the following novels: "Mated with a Clown," "Mollie Darling'" and Only a Village . Maiden, but she had only made about 20 out of them. She de nied that she had written "Major Toddles." She also denied that she went much in society now, and added that as to novel-writing she found it did not" pay. Mr. Quanlrcll called the fudge's attention to an action in a su perior cour, during which the defend ant ha(5 declared that she had an al lowance from., her father, the Earl of Winchelsea; whereupon the defendant esplaiued that since then the allow ance had been stopped: Thejudge said that he had no power to commitja married woman without a seperale income, and dismissed the summons. v- V - - -'" a Freemasonry. New York, June 8. The grand lodge of lreemasons resumed its la bors at 9 o'clock this morning. Yester day's minutes were Approved. Grand Chaplain Camp, as chairman"" of the committee on the grand master's ad- j dress, reportedjn favor of dividing it into parts each: representihg a partic ular subject which should then be re ferred to its appropriate committee. This was done. The report of thexom mittee on finance was "presented, fix ing salaries for the coming-year. The report was adopted. The following officers were elected for ensuing Ma sonic year: Grand Master, Frank R. Lawrence; Deputy Grand Master, j. V. Vrooman; Senior Grand Warden, James Teneyck; Junior Grand Warden, John Hodges; Grand Treasurer, Washing ton E. Connor; Grand Secretary. E. Helers, re elected. At the afternoon session of the grand lodge of Masons to-day repre sentatives of grand lodges of oth'er States and countries visited the session and were" received with due and ancient fdrm. A constitutional amend ment that payment of 15 3'cars dues in advance be one of the'eohditions of conferring a life or "privileged mem bership was referred to the committee on constitution. They Get the Whole Family. Atlant, Ga., Juno 8. A young man named Ilamby, of Fayette County, eloped IastFriday with the daughter of Farmer Stames. 5 Four brothers of Hamby had previously married four -daughters of Stames, although the latter had' objected to some of the marriages. When he J heard of his last single daughter's elopement he was Very angry, but after thinking the matter over he said: "Hang it, if they want the whole family all right; I'll marry the Lold woman myself.' He accordingly rode to the house -of Mrs. Hamby, whose husband died recently, pro posed, was accepted, and the nuptial knot was soon tied. , " Larry Donovan Arrest cel. Londox, June 8 Larry. Dono van, the bridge jumper was ar raigned to-day at the Burr Street police station u a charge of dis orderly; conduct.: He attempted to jump from the Westminster Bridge this afternoon but was arrested be fore he could accomplish his purpose. In such case-no person will be permitted to board the vessel until the medical of ficers in charge of the quarrentir.e shall have given the usual permit. 1 TIinistcr Chastises Ms lrife. Cincinnati. June 7. Rev. VW. H. Boyce, rector of Trinity Episcopal Church, was informed that Mrs. Boyce was on terms of intimacy with Otto Palm, a business man of this city. The minister satisfied himself the charge was true, and last night chastised his wife severely and drove her from his house. The couple have two children, the oldest fifteen years of age". Pro ceedings for a divorce will at ones be instituted. .1 Missionary Eaten by , Can nibals. Des Moines, June - 7. News has just been received at Mansion, Cal houn County, that Rev. Dr. Reid, who left that place last winter to become a missionary in Central Africa, had been killed and eaten by cannibals. ffisconsin Odd Fellows. Madison, Wis., June S. -Reports of officers of the Grand- Lodge of Odd Fellows in session here, show that the order is retrograding in membership, there being a loss of 400 in the year lSSC. The present membership is 15,012. ' Counterfeit Yicltlcs. Chicago, June 8. Quite a num ber of counterfeit nickles are said to be in circulation throughout . the west and the secret service lias been enlisted to hunt itdown. The JTorth Carolina JUurdcrer. On May 23 last a negro man named Caesar AVooten murdered Mittie Strick land, a colored woman, ir Wilson county, N. C. On June 1 Governor Scales offered a reward of $200 fpr the arrest of the murderer. The descrip. tion sent to the sheriffs and chiefs of police said that Wooton was twenty five years old, five feet nine inches high, slender and black, and shows his .teeth when talking. It was thought that he was in Virginia. Yesterd?y Sheriff Southward, of Henrico county, arrested in the lower part of the county a man who seems to answer, the above description. His ac count ot himself is confusing, ancl the she riff is certain that he ' has caughV the man wanted. He has been lodged in the county jail, and the sheriff has placed himself in communication with the North Carolina authorities. Rich mond Whig. V - Haby Ion's Fall. All the magnificent scenery, paiuted in oil. to be used in the lorthcoming representation of the "Fall of "Baby lon." at St George, Staten Island, under the auspices of Erastus Wiman's Staten Island Amusement Company, will arrive fronfCincinnali on the loth inst. It is said that nothing in the way of imposing scenic effects was ever i-een in this country that will bear comparison with the "Fall of Babylon" i-stcck.'and with $50,000 worth o! novel electric lights to set it. off the effect will be, it is claimed, surprisingly beautiful. The entire force of performers,- over one thousand 1n all, is uuder contract and will appear in bril liant regalia on the opening night. June 22. Cook of Lewisburg. was elected chairman. On taking" the chair he congratulated the Board n very prosperous condition of the College. President C. E. Tavlor submitted his reDort of the vr't , W ---w work. Two hundred students were enrolled. The receipts from all sources for the year were $17.199 20. Measures were taken looking to the increase cf the endowment fund and to the early establishment of a chair of English. The outlook for the College was never so bright in its history. Mr. J. H. Mills, of Thomisville, delivered the address before the Alumni Associ- ation on Tuesday 8:30 p. m. The speech was on "Mistakes" and- was unique, and highly characteristic of the speiker. At 1 1 a. m. -on Wednes day Senator M. W. Ransom delivered .the baccalaureate address. His sub ject was the duty of the educated to the uneducated. It was a speech .01 very great beauty and power. Rev. Dr. Airaitage, of New York, will preach the sermon to night. - - - W. R. Gwaltnev. Great Excitement and a Suicide. Batavia, O.. June S. There is great excitement here over the con flagrations lately which were undoubt edly of incndiary origin. Twenty- five armed men patrolled the streets all last night and the unanimous opinion of the c.tizens is that a long rope and a short shift should be ap plied to any suspected persons who may be captured. Lemual Teasdale, whose hardware store was burned yesterday and who suffered a smilar loss two years ago committed suicide this afternoon by stabbing himself though the heart. It is supposed this last misfortune had unsettled his mind. Demand far Small Mils. Washington, Junes. The treas ury is but partially rblo to spply the urgent demands of the banks, es pecially of New York, for one and two dollar certificates. The Increas ed appropriations for their manu facture will not be available until July 1st; after which, It is stated, the supply will be equal to the demand. Trade dollars, in small amounts, con tinue to arrive at the depot It is un known what result will attend furth er efforts to secure trade dollars in China; but it is believed that very -few perfect ones -are in circulation there.
