the Switch Tor Social Purifi

Winchester. O.. June 29. The
organization knowtl 3S the Knights of
the Switch was formed in this (-Adams)
county some six months ago for the
purpose of driving out disreputable
persons and breaking up disorderly
houses. The first act of the organiz
ation, which is about one hundred
Strong, was to whip and tar and feather
several women of bad character.
Last night about twenty of the
Kmghts.mysked and armed with shot
guns aud hickory switches, subjected
two defenseless women to outrageous
treatment. They went to the house of
a woman named Martin, in Jefferson
Township, last night and demanded
admittance. Unon beirc refused thv
battered down the door. Two" men
who were inside made some show of

resisicnce ana several snois were ex-
changed, but no one was hurt. Mrs.
Martin and her daughter Lily were
dragged from, bed, tied to the door
frame and whipped with hickory
switches until they were unconscious
and their bodies covered with bruises
and cuts. Mrs. Martin was the first to
revive, and was told that if she did
not quit the county within twenty-four
hours she and her daughter would
be killed. The men, who were mar
ried farmers living in the vicirlity,
were dismissed with the admonition
that if they were again found in a dis
orderly house they two would be
killed.

They have served notice to leave on

Girard, La June 29. A riot oc
cured at Oak Ridge this morning,
about 5.30 o'clock, in which two
white men and six negroes were kill
ed and several white men dangerous
ly wounded. Parties arriving here
to-day give the following particulars:
Yesterday eveniDg" a negro man, liv
ing in the vicinity of Oak Ridge, as
saulted a white girl. He was arrest
ed about 7 -p. m.', and when the
deputies were taking him to the cala
boose they werefiredupon .by Jerry
Baldwin, colored, his two sons and
three other negroes, wounding Depu
ties Baker and Gardner. The negroes
then dispersed, and later rendezvous
ed at a negro cabin - two miles from
town.
Learning their whereabouts- the
officers went Co arrest them. On ap
proaching the cabin they were fired
upon and one of. their number, G. W.
Higginbotheam, wai killed and Con
stables John Conger, Gardner and
Baker dangerously wounded. ' Dur
ing the melee which followed Jerry
Baldwin and one of his sons and four
other negroes were killed.
A courier just arrived from Oak
Ridge reports everything quiet.
Twenty men from Bastrop have ar
rived there. Conger, who received
eleven bullet wounds,, died at 3
o'clock torday.
