The Wi 1 m i n g t o n Messenger evi dently has a high opinion of the i i : i ? c - i i ' i . auuiucs oi ivir. icveiaiia as a lec- I tcr-writer. It says: "Only Thos. Jefferson among . our Presidents has ever employed !a more effec- tivc epistolary style, and even Jcficrson has, not always been su- pcrior to Cleveland." An English paper tells a wild tale" about an old German who has invented a safe, that on its lock being tampered with throws open-its doors, seizes and drags and locks in the burglar, and handcuffs and holds him in rcadi- n ess to be 'conducted to the po lice court in the morning. "The green melon colic The cucumber colic ! . The old fashioned colic That comes in a twist." Th c New Orleans State having learned that Georgia watermelons are creating some disturbance in Yankee anatomy indulges the fol lowing triumphal outburst : "The South is getting even for all the abuse recently heaped up on it by the fanatics of the For akcr, Fairchild and Tuttier breed. Let the deadly Georgia water melon continue to invade the land of the Grand Army howlers. Their groans will be sweet music to our ears."' NO LA W TO PREVENT GAZI- 'IiLING. It now appears that the law fis powerless to take 1 any steps to ward the conviction and punish ment Of the crowd of fifty negroes who were discovered last Sunday evening m the surburbs of the . town engaged in the "act of gam bling. The names of the offend ers have been secured, proof is positive, but upon application for . warrants for the. arrest of the .7 parties the fact develops. that the Magistrate has V up" authortty to bind them over to court. By the reading of the statutes of North Carolina, this crime is not indict unless it be committed in a tavern, hotel, or other house of entertainment, or on the premises the same. It appears, then, that a grin of - breakers and Sabbat h - break - representing; the worst cle ment of the race to which they belong, may congregate at the very gates of our citics.and.in defi ance to the spirit, of a common- to all righteous people, and a fester in the vitals of all our social and moral interests, t It would seem that the law of our State in regard to this matter - - is a gigantic farce; that it is a law of letter and not of spirit; that it is a meaningless form with con venient loop-holes for the trans gressor to dodge its retributive weight, and because the law does jiot specify in words that it shall be punishable for a crowd of fifty negroes to gamble in the woods, west of Greensboro, near the coal tmf un mn..
