July 13.-The brutal and wanton murder of a prom- incnt citizen occurred this afternoon at 5 o'clock at the corner of Pcnn- sylvania Ave. annd 15th street,' in front of the Riggs Bank. As Joseph C. J. Kennedy left his real estate office immediately adjoining the bank and I ralked toward a, letter-box, he was I followed b John Daly, as he posted I the letter, Mr. Kennedy turned where- upon Daly plunged a case knife to the hilt in the left side ot the aLdomen of the teed man. The stricken one fell to the sidewalk gasping, the blood gushing from the dreadful cut. Dr. Ruth, of the Navy, wKo was driving by, jumped out and pronounced tfce wound fata. Kennedy died in a few minutes. The murderer stood calmly gazing Dt his bloody Ikhife, as a by- stander caught hold! ot him. Daly was soon after taken (n charge by an officer who hurried him to the station. He - Was discharged from, the Work I House this morning and is said to be I demented. The only pos- sible basis tor this statement so lar as can be learned to-night, is that a num ber ol years ago the Daly's father was hthe employ of Mr. Kennedy, wllO gave him a piece of property which he aftei wards bought back. The dread event can probably be set down as another case of genterism. A wifeaiid firr rr:inoTitpr5 snrvivp. trip miiriTerp.n " - I man.
