Miss Ship pey's lather has been much oppose i fo the match and a checkered ccutt ship has been going on. Yesterday Ploquett. came to this city and rote out on a horse-Car to the residence of Justice ol the Peace H. D. Russel, in Fairhaven. Miss Re becca Hunter, daughter of the late Cap. Andrew Hunter, and well known by many summer residents here, was drowned off, the Forty Steps at the cliffs this afternoon under very pecu liar circumstances. She had bscn suf fering from despondency for some timer but appeared better within a day or two. This afternoon she left her cottage, on Church street, saying she was going to make a call. She took a carriage and drove down Naraganselt avenue, which leads to the ocQanTand, telling the driver to wait for her. got out and went down the steps to the rocks. Some yachtsmen who were walking by thought they noticed a body rn the water. It proved to be that of Miss Hunter. - Hoy ally lias v a rail. Dangerous London, July 20. The Duchess of Edinburgh to day launched a life boat at Bembridge, Isle, of Wight. The temporary staging, on which the Duchess and the members of her party j stood, collapsed during the ceremony of lunching. The Princess Beatrice, wife of Prince Henry of Batlenberg, was precipitated towards the . sea and barely escaped being thrown into the water. Hanged for 1ssaulting a Girl. Chicago, July l'U.-A Times sicial from Kauffman, wTex., says : "An infuriated mob of men took Crawford Benson, a negro boy IK years old, from the county jail at 11 o'clock last night and hanged him, afterward riddling him with bul lets. He had committed an assault on a 9 year old girl. '.Fellow Fever. Key West, July 26. One "new case of yellow fever developed today. No deaths occurred. Standartl.j A Frightful accident occurred vs terday on the exercising ground of the cavalry barracks at Jaszbreny, in Hungary'r through the explosion ot a dynamite cartridge, causing the death of twelve soldiers, among whom were some offieers, and wounding numerous pioneers. At 10:30 a, m. Lieut. -Szekacs, of the HonVeds, led fiRy pioneers attached to his regiment to the exercising ground to demonstrate- the effect of the Pickfbrd fuse on dynamite cartridges. Two cartridges were placed upon a'table, ono'fmished, the other but half finished.- Lieut Szekacs 'lighted 'a r fuse, "burned his hand and dropped the burning fuse. The unfinished cartridge at once ex ploded, whereupon the finished one blew up with a tremendous detona tion. All he fifty persons standing around the table were dreadfully injured. ; Lieut. Szekaci fell dead on the spot; Surgeon Kollen who was merely a spectator, was likewise killed, Lieut. H uebner was obliged to have an arm and leg amputated forthwith. This generous offer will be utilized at an early day, and this lovely North Carolina Marble will soon do honor to some patriot's grave. Col. Roger J. Pagerof AsheviMc, has donated some beautiful slabs of mica ceous slate, which is bestulded with garr et crystals, all over it; to box the springs on the property, and is wiliing to send the Company more, from his wonderful quary of this curious rock if needed. Mr. E. B. Thomas, General Manager of the Richmond & Danville Railroad Co., will give free transportation to the monuments to Greensboro, and Col. Julius A. Gray. President of the Cape-Fear & Yadkin Valley Railway, will land them safe and free on the Battle Ground. A wealthy citizen of Western North Carolina has under consideration a still more liberal and costly donation than any of the former ones. The success of the scheme exceeds all expectations, and soon our citizens will rejoice in" the redemption of this sacred spot and in having one of the loveliest parks in the South, within 45 minutes drive of our city. A good force has been at work for the last ten daystleaning up the grounds. Those who have given to this worthy enter prise are to be congratulated on its success and on their patriotic gene rosity. Shot in the Head. Nashville, Ter.n., July 26. This morning Ed. Luster, an aged saddler, shot and instantly killed J. T. Lancia one armed lawyer, at Lebanon, thirty miles from Nashville. Lane was read ing a paper in front of his office when Luster fired two loads of buckshot in to his head. Lane has acted as an at torney for Mrs. Luster in a divorce suit against her husband, hence Lus ter's act.
