they played a game with the Raleigh

The Jlaleigh club certainly played
well . The base-ball season has

Wtien the grounds have been placed
in good condition and the battle-field
has been restored and marked out -as
it was, the property will be offered to
theU. S. government, provided it wilj
erect a suitable monument there to the
memory of Gen. Greene and make
provision for keeping up the property.
It ii a matter worthy of : the attention
of, the Federal government, lor, as
-Yoiktown was the final scene in the
dtama of Cornwalls capture, Guilford
Court House Was the opening of the
play. It was there that Greene crip
pled him and so broke up his aitny
that Cornwallis had to retrc tt upon
Wilmington, and thence j marched
northward to his capture. k As has
usually been the case, history has
done scant justice to the action of the
Nor:h Carolinians in that affair and
though' Carruthers has contributed

Atlanta, July 2S.-KeV. William
R. Clemm'ons. a popular colored
nreacher. was shot- in the lei? on
Wednesday. night last. It was claimed
that he was chased by three men and
shot while escorting Miss D.-lla Hurst
home. Great mystery surrounded the
affair, and secrecy was observed by the
parties, it was found necessary to
amputate thepastor's leg. and he died
from the effects of the operation yes
terday. It has been ascertained that
the reverend gentleman, who was a
widower, was popular with the sisters,
and was in the habit of seeing choice
Iambs of the flock home after prayer
meeting. Miss Hurt is an uncom
monly stylish girl, and when Clem
monsoffeied her his arm that night
le was shadowed. The intimation now
is that the shots were not fired until
thorevcrend centleman reached the
lady's chamber. The effort at secrecy
was for the purpose of hiding the situation.-
but death has disclosed it all.
