A - slight earth quake shock was felt here at 12:36 this morning. Jt woke up the occupants of houses but no damage is reported. The movement . was from south to north, and, the vibration lasted from eighHo ten seconds. - Huntsville. Ala.. Adg. 2. At 12:30 this morning a distinct earthquake shock was felt in. this city, arousing sleepers by trie noise and motion. The vibration was horn north to south. m.r Boohkeeper9 Forger and Thief '. Chicago, Aug. 2, A. J. Whiman, bookkeeper for the Centril Union Telephone Company, was arrested to day for forgery, and was committed to the Criminal Court under $25,000 bonds.. Three years ago Whitman entered the telephone company's em ploy, and rapidly won his way to a position of confidence and responsi Diiuy. wuinn tnose inree yearsi so far as ascertained, be has stolen $20,- 060. On June 16 last he forged two checks for $20,000 each on the North western National Bank, He drew up a check on the bank to the order of F. P. "Ross, Manager of the telephone company, signed by WYS. Chapman, the Treasurer, and countersigned by Geo. I. Phillips, the President, and in dorsed by Ross. On-the same day. and in like fashion, as well as to an equal amount. Whitman , fraudulently issued anoiher check except that in this instance C. H. Wilson was the payee. The bank people had Whitman'ar rested on these two charges, "and the officers of. the telephone company testified that- they Tiad discovered their losses at Whitman's" dextrous hand amounted to nearly $20,000. Fred Zimmerman, of the Chest- bluefish, Weakflsh. . sheepsheads. &c J While thus engaged a menhaded fish- ing schooner swept around the" point and inclosed Mr. Zimmerman's boat in their net. ;As the purse strings tight ened his boat tilted and was -in danger of being upset. He shouted to the menhauen fishermen to let him . out, but they kept on hauling in their net. He. then cut-a buoy line and got his boat ont. at the fame time releasing the fish in the net This angered the menhaden men A-ho opened fire upon Zimmerman and his companion.
