This region possesses a greater number of conditions favosable to the recovery of lung diseases than any other part of the United States. This being true, it is but natural that people from oth er sections, wbo are suffering from such diseases should come to Ashe ville to be cured. Notwithstanding this, however, the proportion of these sick people Is very small as compared to the healthy visitors, who come to enjoy the beautiful scenery, and cli mate of Asheville. "all-the-y ear-round re- est mountains of the Blue Ridge are not far distant, notably "the majestic peak, . Mount Pisgah, to the southwest. " Pure Water. Here is where we literally look down on all competors. The Asheville water system is probably the finest gravity line of waterworks in this country, if not In the world. For im mediate needs, fire, and reserve pur poses . the city reservoir has ample ca pacity at an elevation above the Square of 210 feet The gravity line consists of seventeen miles of sixteen inch pipe, laid deep in the ground over valley and ridge, to the North Fork of the Swannanoa, a stream whose source is a thousand springs, high up toward the top of Mount Mitchell (the high est point east of the Rockies), at an elevation of 6,711 feet. The city owns the watershed of over 10,000 acres. An unbroken forest untouched by the hand of man; covered with a , virgin (growth of laurel azalea, rhododen dron, balsam, oak, chestnut, poplar, gum, walnut, hickory and many other varieties; abounding in. waterfalls, alive with speckled trout, which thrive only in the clearest water: Water comes leaping ; and clashing The Horse Show. school buildings. Asheville a Convention City. Asheville as a convention city grat ifies that chlefest of convention needs the climatic influence for refreshing comfort whether, the hours are spent in . the business sessions . of f the occa sion or are enjoyed in recreation as the individual may desire. The sun shine temperature does . not fatigue, the nights are always cool, and the tonic of the mountain breezes is in it all. The justly-earned reputation of Asheville in respect to conventions is that of a city., having, "welcome" post ed upon its gates. Water power is abundant, as may be , inferred from the character , of the country. Streams are bold;; free, and numerous the water is pure,, clear and Without limit, free, from, iron and soft, exactly what is needed for bleacherfes, dye works, tanneries, pulp-maklngr etc. Several tanneries are in successful operation.
