The revenue receipts at the Winston office for the week ending Tuesday, July 19th, amounted to $11,703,58. " ' The .attendance at th five white Stata Normal Schools now in operation is reported as larger than ever before. A negro boy employed in the shuttle block factory of Mesrs. Huff & Warner, at Concord, had his hand completely cut off. Grace Alexander, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. V. Lloyd, of South Greensboro, died Monday evening af 5 o'clock. Alexander Hall, a venerable negro fisherman, was found dead on a rock in the Pee Dee River, in Rockingham county. There are over 600 people at the At lantic hotel, Morebead, the largest num ber of regular guests that fine hotel has ever had. The citizens of Beaufort have sub scribed $1,000 for building an assembly room for the Teacher's Assembly if its sessions are held there. Lightning struck the stable of T. " E. Powell, near Rocky Mount the past week Two horses and an ox were killed The stables caught on fire, but the rain put it out. Charlotte is Laving trouble with' her fire departments. Three companies hare disbanded and turned their property over to the city and a volunteer serviee has been enrolled! . Mrs. M. M. 8nell, a leader in the W. O. T. U. of Mississippi, has been chosen editor of the Sword and Shield, publish ed at Jackson, In place of Roderick D. Gambrell, lately assassinated. The editor ia slowly improving, we are in hopes that he will be able to take charge of the paper in a week or so. Ve have had greater difficulties this week in getting out the paper than ver. The confidence sharpers are ' practi cing their game in different. parts of the State. Our people should be on their guard and give the men who are trying to practice their dodge on them a wide berth.. - -,, The Durham Recorder gives the fol lowing inventory of that city : Five hun dred cats, two hundred dgs, three hun dred babies, water works, two street cars, electric lights, factories and stores innu merable. The contract lor the building of the new Graded School house has been let to Mr. Thomas Woodroffe, at a bid of $11,- 700. Mr. Woodroffe is to take the old building at a price named by three disin terested parties. Mr. S. S. Jackson who has been in the employ of Mr. J. L. Stone of Raleigh, the well kcown dealer in Musical Instru ments and Sewing Machines, is no longer with him. Mr. Stone desires to notify all parties that Mr. Jackson is not authorized to transact any business, whatsoever for him. Two nerrn women. An Electxio storm At Charlotte. ' j Tuesday evening the heated . term at Charlotte was rudely vexed Tjy a terrible electric storm. The lightning struck in scores of places and did great damage. . It wrecked two buildings.ach occupied by negroes, and perhaps- fatally shocked a woman in each. It set another house on fire. MMHMH " I. , A railroad meeting was held a few days I since at Madison. Kockingham county; for the important purpose of raising mon ey to build the Madison branch of the C. F. & Y. V. R. R. from Madison to Stokes- dale, Stokes county.. Huntsville and New Bethel were represented by persons who subscribed about four thousand dollars to the capital stock of the C F. & Y. V. Railroad. A committee was appointed to raise the remaining amount necessary in Greensboro, and report raised without dif ficulty, to the very dollar.- The distance is only eleven miles and the branch, if built will prove an excellent feeder to the Cape Fear & Y. The following are the regulations pass ed at the Commissioners' Meeting - last Friday night IBe it ordained by the Board of Commis sioners of the city of Greennba o.-r-Tht the constables elected for the year 1887 shall be subject to removal by the 'board at any time that it shall be ascertained as a fact by said, beard. 2 That any one of said constables com monly known as police be found intoxi cated daring the hours In which he shall be on active duty. Or be found in any house where intox icating liquors are sold, or any bawdy house or house of ill fame, unless he be in said house in the discharge of police duty. 3 Or be found asleep or neglecting his duty during the hours assigned to him for active duty. "4 Or for failure to arrest persons who he knows are violating the ordinance ofl the city." 5 "Or for receiving money from any one who has violated the ordinances of the city as a compensation not to arrest or expose said person' - 9 Or for unnecessary -cruelty to any one under arrest or whom he is arresting. : 7. -For arresting persons wilfully with out proper authority and in manifest ex cess of his powers as a police officer. 8 - Or for takiner or attempting to take unlawful fees amounting to extortion.
