Entered at the postoffi ce it Greenville, N. (j. as s--ond das mail matter. TEIDAY, February 8, 1895. MR. FRENCH. HO TEARS. T he added additional honor to the highest girt that his lrienus couiu confer. As minister to Brazil dor ing the troublous times that follow ed the dethronement of Dom l'edro, he held the dignity ol the Uuited States sa high that his very name was an ark of defense. As a Sena tor he. recalled the days ol the Bad'gt-rs and the Grahams. rK soon for the Old North States clo ry he haj met the fate of the martyr. On his return be will find iu the bosom of every North Carolinian whose State piide i greater than party fealty, a welcome mingled with ters of regret. lie i an honor to a Stat- whose sons love purity, We take no stock in the ru- mor that the Railroad, Commis sion will be abolished and a new one made with only one' man composing it. There are - too many Populists who must have something. It may be abolish ed and a new one established, but it would more likely be composed of five men than of one. There ae already many aspirants for 'the oneplacp ithat will have to be filled if no other ! to a S change is made.' Thev would lnth " manhood. Wtuliiugton . .News, never agree to one man. haying " GOODS lVnht to Please Your Eye it all. i Representative French of 'New Hanover seems to have put his foot in it wpeu he crossed swords with the News and Ob server on his 1868-9 legislative record. It is to , be regretted that such things should be re vived but. it seems that that pa mper b on the defensive in a very aigressive manner, being fully Justified 'iii what it does. . Mrl , French is a fairly able man,, made- a good postmaster ' and "was honored, by his party " with a seat "in the seat, and , ( the trouble seems to be that he . has bn on his ' feet too often instead of in his seat. Your Purse, Your Judgement. There 16 not a Shoddy Article in the Store. C SJMULATIYK. The County Government and Election. bills seems to be giving the .f unionists some trouble. . What will be done, who knows? The cumulative, plan of vot ing is a new one in North car ,. . olina. We recently saw in an exchange that it had been tried J out West and found wanting . .was immediately declare i nn- constitutional, as no constitu ' tiori ever contemplated more than one vote for one man by oneat one time. Wouldn't it be a good. name J to call it a,n act to "encourage fraud at the ballot box ?" FE.SCE TAX. The Legislature has or surely wMl put the fence tax back up on the town as it was two years ago. The town ought to (-pay its part of the tax, but it does not seem right that a farmer with TOO acres of land should pay no more fence tax than an owner of one lot in town It seems to us that the tax ought to be per acuk instead of AD VALOREM. . TREASURER LITTLE The Commissioners snrelv did well in electing Mr Little treas urer of the countjv He is an excellent young man of sterling worth, strict integrity and tine business capacity and will make an efficient and accommodating offi:er- No better selection could have been made, and extire sat isfaction is expressea by every Oi?e. GRADED SCHOOL. THE STATE GUARD. We liAve heard ajittie talk in favor of a graded school. By all mean it there is any possi ble way to have one, let's have it. Greenville badly needs such a school. Let everybody get together and see what can be done. Suppose a public meet ing be called to consider such a movement. An KngliKh View. The YyilinLngton Siar has receiv ed from a Liveroool cotton firm the annexed circular, which cotton planters should read and consider carefully : Liverpool, January 15, 1895. "Since our Tetter of the 12th De cember, in which we referred, tn ihe continued gelling of new crops, there has beeo further decline and cot ton for 1893-96 is selling here on a a basis of about four coutw on plan tations in Auieric: the seilers of these positions ate very aggressive, and reports being current that an other large crop will be planted, feel confident thai tliey will, be enabled to purchase their present sales at. a profit of one cent or more, in other vords, they exect that farmers will be ready to jart with the next crop at three cents aud below. "Of course the e is little or no doubt that if it is left to Liverpool merchants and Manchester bpiuners, prices will rule very low, , and it would be unfortunate if we wonld get another enormous crop; even ii.OOO.OOO bales would be a great deal too large for the worldY require ments when wo rougider that the English spinner is by no means in a good (Wjsitiou, although Continen tal trade conditions France, Gr many, Austria and Russia we beg to say are fainy favorable. Very truly, Bkek, Cowell & Co. Shoes. Panta and Hats Ladies I Dress Grinds 1 -tWWrW, HOSIERY Genta' lie Is Worthy of AH II uRtr. We have not , kept up with the proceedings of the Legisla ture, but have .read enough to know that it is . an enemy to many of our most needed and useful institutibns. Among these is the State Guard, for which few Populists and Re publicans entertain much love. v It is .most certairr to suffer at the hands of ' this legislature and that fact' should make the people more appreciative of it. The different counties should hot be too stingy in making appropriations for it. Let eve ry one help in this matter. The State Guard must be sustained. In the retirement of Senator Thomas J Jarvis North Carolina loses a representative who has hon ored her iu every position to which he has beeu called. When tbe Canby constitution was foisted on an unwilling people, big voice was heard above the storm of unreason ing abuse. Like Leouidas at Ther mopylae he stood undismayed. His following was of the fewest; yet out of the chaos he brought order. His work for the Old North State waa that of the hero, who forgets all of self and immolates himself on the al tar of- his country's snfferiugs. Maimed by the bullet of the North," his brain look on higher resolves. He fought the battles in a forensic warfare with consummate ability, ana impressed a never dying fame on me nisiory or his stat.
