Moss, Republican chair man of the Board, of Commission of Vance county, was bpjind overtocourt in a bond of $500, charged with offer ing to take a bribe to issue liquor li censes. t A 'boiler explosion occurred at a saw mill in the lower section of Beaufort county a few days ago. Two men, were killed and ; several others very badly injured. t De Armltt's Hen Join the Strikers. Columbus, Aug. 6. Bulletin No. 3, -1 : by President Ritchford, to the coal miners, recalls the meeting of labor chiefs at Wheeling, and their unanim ity, and asserts that if the Miners lose, it will be their own fault. Western Pennsylvania has added 1,600 miners to the list of strikers. This includes three De Armitt mines. De Armitt says West Virginia opera tors contributed $10,000 through min ers' officials to stop coal mining in Ohio and Pennsylvania. He is defied to make the charge direct against any miness' official. West Virginia is now the battle ground. A more thorough campaign is about to be started there. Miners are congratulated for good order. - Dingley and Wilson Bills Compared. Washington, August 5. The com pleted comparison of the tariff bill prepared .by Mr. Charles H. Evans, the tariff expert, was made public to day. The following are some of the comparisons, in addition to those given last week : ; The average ad valorem duty of the flax, hemp and jute schedule is lower in the new law than in the Wilson. That of the Wilson law was 46.94 per cent. The present law is 45.18 per cent. The average ad valorem of the pulp, paper and book schedule under the present law is 30.30 per cent ; un der the Wilson law it was 22.18 per cent. The average ad valorem of the sundry schedule under the Dingley aw is 23.35 per cent, and under the Wilson tariff law it was 24.70 per cent. The total value of articles trans ferred from the free list to the dutia ble slist is placed at $101,968,941. Only two articles were transferred from the dutiable to the free list. These were cocoanuts in the shell and sheep dips. Bound, and Gagged. South Bend, Ind.,Aug. 5. Masked men bound and gagged the agent of the Gabraith Grand Trunk Railway here last night and then blew up the safe, securing from it a considerable sum of money. Among the sons Of the Tar Heel are State distinguish-; ed characters, but the Hon. Ki Gudger is equaled dy few and excelled by none of them.
