After he had been con victed his wife made affidavit that La nier had assaulted her and that her husband killed him in revenere for the deed. Able counsel carried the case before the Governor and sought to have Perry reprieved; his wife also went be fore the Governor and made a heart breaking appeal for the rescue of her children from the odium of the gal lows, but Governor Atkinson refused to interfere. A former boarder at Perry's house came from Key Weston Monday to substantiate the statement of Mrs. Perry but it was to no pur pose. C, Sept. 8, 97. S The nature of the soil in this section makes it almost necessary for cyclers, if they ride at all, to ride upon the sidewalks. The board of aldermen very wisely granted them this ' privi lege upon all streets except Payette ville, but such! permission should be lightly restricted. Almost ill the larger towns in the state y have restrictions as to speed, and also re quire lamps to be carried at night. It is the latter requirements that High Point needs at present. Several acci dents have occurred which should serve as warnings in this particular. Wheel men who ride the sidewalks after dark should be compelled to provide lights for their wheels , as many of cmr streets are very dark, and it is almost im possible for either rider or pedestrian to detect the approach of the other.
