THE CAMERA AT PH1LLIPPI
Scenes of the Fox Meet at that
Historical Hunting Ground
' 'SAID GOVERNOR TO GOVERNOR"
Sport Royal in the Old North State.
The Picaninny that Enjoyed Him
self Dressing Gown Start.'
D. Schenck, Jr.. captured a lot of
photographs down at the Phillipi fox
meet that he prizes more than any oth
er trophy of the event. There are two
dozen of them and they cover all the
phases of life at the camp. One of the
pictures shows all the nimrods just as
they returned from the chase. Gover
nor Atkinson, of Georgia, is in I the
centre with Reynard in his hand and
the other members of the group are J .
F. Jordan, Wm. A. Love, Maj. J. J.
Nelson, D. Schenck, Jr., Capt. Oscar
J. Brown, of the U. S. calvary and A.
F. Brooks. !
Governor Atkinson insisted j on
holding the fox. He said that he had
a lot of constituents down in Georgia,
who were disposed to be skeptical
about his being off on a fox hunt, and
he wished to have ocular evidence that
he both hunted and caught. It is not
at all improbable that this picture
will figure in future cracker campaigns
down in the red hills of Joel Chandler
Harris and Frank L. Stanton. The
Governor looks handsome and youth
ful, and sits his horse like a born
Cavalier. Captain Brown of the first
cavalry has been in the frontier ser
vice since 1877. He was instructor in
horsemanship in West Point for a
number of years, and is a magnificent
equestrian. , One of the pictures in
which he and the Governor appear
makes it certain that it was unneces
sary lor the .Governor of Georgia to
reiterate the suggestion once made by
the "Governor of North Carolina to
the Governor of South Carolina."
His fondest wishes in that direction
were manifestly anticipated by the
gentlemen of the party. j
One of the most unique of the collec
tion shows Mr. Jordan answering the
call "boots and saddles" in a dress
ing gown,, while Mr. Love appears
canopied with an umbrella. The pic
tures of the famous dogs, old Mose,
Bert, Kate, Wonder, Lena and Dash
are excellent, but then a dog of all
animals is the especial pet of the
camera.
The "shirtless picaninnyjshould
become classic. As a photographic
art studv the maarazines have shown
nothing better, while the "picaninny
and pine rooter" are breezy of the pine
and sand flats at Phillippi.
Sam Harvey Drunk Again.
Sam Harvey, who lives somewhere
put on Ashe street, was drunk again
last night. It was only last Sunday
that he was pulled for drunkness and
disorderly conduct, and on Monday
he was released by the mayor on
promise of good behavior. But he
soon forerot his promise, for he
was rip-roaring drunk last night, and
his performance of iast Sunday was a
tame affair compared with last night's
Sam appeared on the streets with a
shot gun, and must have thougnt it
was Christmas or imagined that he
was a revenue officer after moonshin
ers. He blazed away with his old gun
causing terror in the immediate vicin
ity, but no one was hit. He must
have shot at the moon, thinkingr the
moonshiners were up there.
His Honor ,the mayor, will probably
enforce a sober spell on Sam this trip.
He seems to be an old offender, and
has heretofore gotten off very lightly.
He was arrested last nieht by officer
Whittington.

MONSTER DOUBLE MENAGERIE
With John Robinson and Franklin
Bros, Shows Combined.
The menagerie department of these
combined shows is beyond a doubt the
greatest that the world has ever known
The two menageries have been blended
into one, and the combining of these
two separate and distinct departments
alone would make a display the equal
of which has never been seen in the
country.- There are two distinct herds
of elephants, camels and all sorts of
lead stock, two separate departments
of lions, tigers, panthers and the only
pair of real black tigers that has ever
been seen in this country. The den of
polar bears is a positive revelation to
amusement seekers and the same thing
was never seen in this country before
with a traveling show.
A great many dens of rare wild
beasts are displayed daily in the mag
nificent street parade, which is free to
all and will take place daily at 10 a.
m. And the very important fact must
not be overlooked that every other
department of these great shows is a
double one, unlike any ever before
seen. Many snows nave ana ao attne
present time advertise dishonestly that
they have two shows in one, but there
has never been a combining of two
really great shows in this land before,
and people who are in doubt as to the
genuineness of the putting together of
the John Robinson and Franklin
Bros.' Shows can readily set their
minds at rest. This monster amuse
ment institution comes so Greensboro,
Saturday Oct. 16th, for one day and
will give two complete performances.
THE COLORED MILITIA.
Capt. Taylor Will Take His Company
. to Raleigh.
Capt. C. S. L. A. Taylor, who, as
noted several days ago, went to Ral
eigh to make arrangements in connec
tion with his chief marshalship at the
Colored Industrial Fair, returned yes
terday, reporting everything satisfac
tory. He takes his company the Char
lotte Light Infantry to the fair, and
right now he asks the Observer to ask
'the white folks to let his men off.
Surely there isn't a merchant in town
who has ever seen Capt. Taylor drill
his men who will deny him the pleasure
of taking them to-Raleigh to show the
people down there military tactics as
only Capt. Taylor knows them.
Capt. Taylor, who is also an enthu
siastic Odd Fellow, being deputy dis
trict grand, went to Goncord las night.
on lodge business. Charlotte Ob
server. Our County Roads.
A gentleman who takes a great in
terest in the development of our coun
ty road system, tells us that the road
force is doing good work between Guil
ford College and Oak Ridge. Prof.
Bandy has made surveys of the Per
kins hill, and the hill near Stafford's
mill and the grade has been reduced
from 18 to 25 per cent.
We most heartily commend the wis
dom of our county commissioners in
securing the services of an engineer.
We regret that occasionally a man is
found so narrow and selfish as to try
to retard this most important work.
Give Guilford county a good sys
tem of roads and a good public school
system in addition to her .excellent
private schools one to develop her
agriculture and material interests, the
other for her educational advancement
and the result will be well worth the
trial.

GIVE US PIE, THE BATTLE CRY

SNICKERSNEE FOR GO. OFFICERS
The Disposal of the Postofflce Left
to Senator Prltchard Boiling En
thuslam A Block of Five.
In response to the handbill signed
'Many Republicans," calling a meet
ing at Bogart's Hall last night, the
colored brother swarmed and pitched
pitched at the hall and pitched into
certain other people. The object of
the meeting was to protest against the
treatment received by the colored voter
at the hands of white Republicans, and
the Republican officials of Guilford
county especially.
It was a colored man's meeting from
start to finish and the hall was packed
and jammed. There was a benchful of
white Republicans present but, as one
of the promoters of the meeting ex
pressed it, "it got too warm for 'em
and they skipped out in a bunch."
W. E. Holley was made chairman
and A. G. Nelson secretary of the
meeting. Speeches were made by D.
J. Gilmer, Prof. J. S. Williams, of
colored graded school No. 1, Prof.
JohnEdwell, of Jonesboro school, and
Prof. W. B. Windsor, of Bennett col
lege. The speeches were warm and
were all along the same line denunci
ation of the county Republican offi
cials for their ingratitude in not divid
ing the spoils. Some say that Tyre
Glenn was excepted from the anath
emas and some say he was not.
One of the speakers said it was the
white Democrats who gave the colored
man the employment that enabled him
him to feed his family; that the negro
did not object to the treatment of the
Democrats but of the Republicans.
Prof. Edwell said that under the fusion
arrangement the Populists, with 50,000
voters, get two-thirds of the spoils,
the white Republicans get the rest
and the negro, with 120,000 vot
ers, gets nothing. He advised col
ored men to vote with the party
that promised the most spoils, re
gardless of politics or religion. It
was declared to be the sense of the
meeting that a split be made in the
Republican party in this county.
In regard to the post-office, the meet
ing crave Senator Pritchard a vote of
confidence and said that whatever ac
tion he migrht take would be satisfac-
tory.
A committee of five was appointed
to wait on Sheriff Hoskins and ask
him to give a colored man a position
of some nature. No mention was
made of the Bridges meeting.
