BRIEF LOCAL MATTERS. C. E. Holton, Esq., of Durham, is in the city. L. B. Brickenstein, of Salem, was in the city today. Mrs. Henry Kime, of Burlington, is a visitor in the city today. Chas. Ragan and Will Jones, of High Point, are in the city. Mr. J. R. Paddison, of Mt. Airy, spent the day in Greensboro. The vestibule going south this morning was over two hours late. The pastors of the city are requested to send in church notices by noon to morrow. John M. Dick, proprietor of the steam laundry, went up to Winston this afternoon. The Bogart-Conrad excursion is ex pected to return from Washington to night at 10:45. Rev. T. A. Smoot came up from High Hoint on the noon train and will return tomorrow. W. P. Fife, the drummer evangelist, passed here on the noon train today en route to New York. Mrs. Nannie Word, of Virginia, is visiting the family of her nephew, W. W. Wood, Sr., on Spring street. A number of Wilkes county people who were here attending court, re turned home early this morning. Rev. Robt. E. Caldwell, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, Wins ton, was here today about noon. W. F. Clarida, one of our efficient mail carriers, left this mor-ning to at tend Sandy Creek Baptist association at Brush Creek. Jos. J. Johnson, who was here yes terday purchasing goods for the alli ance store of which he is manager, re turned home today. Messrs. Hinkle Bros, have opened their new store at 110, West Market street. We commend these gentlemen to the trading public. Read what they say in ther new ad in this paper. Handsome invitations have been is sued for a reception to be given by the Merchants and Manufacturers As sociation, in their rooms; in the Katz building, on next Thursday evening the 14th, inst. Mr. Steven Miller, who is connected with Maxvil's furniture house of Au gusta, Ga.. is stopping with relatives at Mrs. R. M. Middleton's, enroute to Knoxville, Tenn. , where he is to open up a branch house for the Augusta firm. ' The trial of causes in the federal court proceeds rather slowly, and up to recess this afternoon, no cases of importance had been tried. The long est sentence imposed so far is six months in jail. A large attendance is still here. The street running from West Mar ket, past Greensboro Female college, on the west side, is being closed up. Bicycle riders, and others are grumb ling. They say the next street beyond is almost impassable, and that the prettiest drive in town will be spoiled - by the new arrangement. There was the usual large crowd at Dr. Blue Mountain Joe's show last night, and as usual the audience was highly entertained and pleased. To night an attractive program will be presented. The troupe has become so well and favorably known that it is necessary only to announce that the performance will take place. Chairman Pickard, of the street com mittee, and Foreman Sam Browne both deserve special praise for the very marked improvement on Spring street. It is really one of the prettiest and most attractive streets in town and people living oh that street and those near by onother streetsdesire to thank the street officials for the good work done and for the neat manner in which it has been completed. Only one runaway has been reported since yesterday's issue. Late yester day afternoon Mr. J. Henry Phipps' horse was standing in front of the store, on Asheboro street, when one of the shafts, in some way, broke and dropped on the animal's heels. Like a flash it darted away at wild speed. Mr. Phipps' little son was in the wag on and heroically held on to the reins and loudly yelled for help. The rear axle was broken and this was about all the damage done. The horse was stop ped about Mr. J. A. Murchison's )lace and the little boy lifted from his perilous position. Tobacco Association's New Officers. The Greensboro Tobacco Associa tion met at 3 o'clock this afternoon in the office of J. S. Cobb and elected the following officers: President J. N. Leak. Vice President H. C. Berger. Treasurer W. E. Bevill. Secretary John W. King. Sales Committee J. F. Jordan, J. S. Cobb, H. C. Berger. Arbitration Committee T. B. Yuille, E. J. Stafford, W. E. Bevill. Executive Committee J. H. Whitt, C. A. Bray, G. H. McKinney. NEWS OF THE TAR HEEL STATE. Five of the Durham county bonds, aggregating $2,500 , are missing and cannot be accounted for. . j A charter has been granted by the state to the Sanford Trouser: Company with $10,000 capital, at Sanford. J. K. Wells is commisioned first lieutenant and J. P. Roberts second lieutenant of Company H, Fourth reg iment. The Carolina railroad stockholders met yesterday in Wilmington and elec ted a new board of directors ::or the en suing year. ) Near Apex the revenue people cap tured a 30-gallon illicit distillery The moonshiners got away, but the still was warm. j The people of Concord will make vigorous efforts to keep the John Rob inson circus from putting up its tents in that town on Sunday. s j The Secretary of State has this year licensed 36 life, and 78 fire insurance companies, while 11 have failed to re new license, and one has collapsed. I 1 W. H. Lemly, a farmer of Rowan county, was found dead by the road side with his neck broken. He had been seen driving a team of fractious horses, and it is supposed they ran away with him. J President Richard H. Battle goes to Washington to invite President J Mc Kinley to attend the State Fair. Gen. Cox and James E. Boyd will accom pany him in the call on the President and will unite in the request.! : II- The Cody brothers, held at Red Lodge, Mont., for the North Carolina authorities, have been released on habeas corpus on the ground of in sufficiency in the sheriff's return. The men are under sentence of death for burglary, in North Carolina.' John R. Smith superintendent of the penitentiary, is on the move these days. He is a much worried man. The relations between Governor Rus sell and himself are quite j strained now. It seems that the Governor is not satisfied with Smith's manage ment. i - ! The Sanford clothing manufacturing company was incorporated yesterday by the secretary of state for a period of thirty years. The capital j stock of the company is $10,000, divided into shares of $100 each. The incorpora tors A. L. McNeill, W. A. j Monroe and W. J. Edwards, of Sanford. The purposes of the company are to man ufacture articles of wearing apparel and selling general merchandise. A Notable New Work. The current issue of the ''College Message' ' contains the first enstallment of a new work by Prof. Chas. Rapr, of Greensboro Female College, on'The Church and Private Schools of North Carolina." The work will be publish ed serially in the above periodical. It will be noted at some length in tomor row's paper. Public Debate at Whitsett. There will be a joint debate between the Athenian and Dialectic societies of Whitsett Institute, at 8 p. m. Oct.l6th.
