Mr. Louis James, the greatest living American interpreter of the heroic roles of the classics will be seen here on March 14th at the Academy of Mu sic in a magnificent revival of Julius Caesar. The role of the Brutus has always been one of his greatest imper sonations. He is particularly adapted to it, his heroic proportions, the leon ine majesty of his face, his power and artistic attrition fitting themselves ad mirably to the character. In the last five years he has been acknowledged everywhere as the .greatest living in terpreter of the abused General, a fame not limited to America, but extending beyond the seas to England and the continent. Messrs. Wagenhals and Kemper, Mr. James' managers, have given him an exceptionally strong company and a magnificence of stage production which has rarely been equalled. 'Judge H. G. Connor, Hon. F. A. Woodard and Judge W. A. Mont gomery were the judges who decided the result of the contest. While they were out after the close of the arguments the audience was favored with several pieces of splen did music rendered by members of the University Glee Club. After being out twenty minutes the judges returned bringing a unanimous decision in favor of Carolina. J. F. M. Did You Know It? In conversation with a gentleman from Laurinburg this morning the Tel egram man was informed that a recent examination of the census reports re vealed the fact that Richmond county, North Carolina, was second only to one county in the United States in amount of cotton produced !per acre. The first place belongs to Carrol county, Miss. We venture the assertion that very few North Carolina people know that among all the boasted cotton growing sections of the south, Richmond county stands second in point of fertility; that is, it produces the second largest number of bales according to acreage. A few nights ago he was called into the country to perform a marriage ceremony. It is said the minister bears a striking resemblance to the groom. After the rites were performed an old-fashioned bell-crowd appeared on the scene-and rushing into the house mistook the minister for the groom and nabbed him, carrying .him into the yard, where his ears were deafened by the sound of horns r tin pans and cow bells. On the north bound vestibule last night was a gay party of some fifteen or twenty from the land of the sky, the home of J. Wiley Shook, the stamp ing ground of the iridescent Mr. Pear son. From town and country, hill and vale, they had been gathered in through no fault of theirs and were being yanked along to Washington, D. C, to prove the f'kareckter" .of Hamilton G. Ewart, sometime candi date for the Western District judge ship. They were of all shades of political opinion and belief, true blue, ring streaked and striped. They were discussing the occasion that took them to Washington and laughed much mirthful laughter at the way Uncle Sam's leg was being pulled. Five cents per mile each way was the tune of it, they said , and keep while at the Capital. One or two of the crowd said it was a beastly shame but they were not responsible for it. Mr. Butler had attacked the record of Judge Ewart and things had to be proved. The length of their stay in Washing ton they did not at all know but they did not seem worried about it. MORE BOND TROUBLE. Harrison Verdict Meets With General Approval. Spe al to Thx Tklbgram. ' Winston, Mar. 5 The jury of the Harrison case at 7:30 o'clock last night brought in a verdict of not guilty. The verdict appears to give general approval around the city. This case has created a good deal of interest in the county and was one of the hardest fought cases had here in many years. The speeches were all good and each received much commen dation from the-citizens and visitors. THEY ARE NOT ENTHUSIASTIC. Seem to Think Two Treatfes Will Be Required and Prefer Present Cuban Tariff. By Cable to The Telegbam. " Madrid, Mar. 5 The government has consulted the chambers of com merce throughout the country respect ing the proposed commercial treaty with the United States. The Bilbas chamber replies that considering the present conditions of the mercantile relations it can see no necessity for the treaty. If the negotiations are successful it is of the opinion that two treaties will be requisite. One between America and Spain and one between America and Cuba. The former would be reciprocal, the latter limited to concessions contained in the Cuba tariff law of 1897. This would main tain a protection of 32 per cent and a maximum of 20 per cent. It is believed that the other chambers will take the same action. Essex Sails. By Wire to Thk Tklbgram. Washington, Mar. 5 The training ship Essex sailed this morning from Hampton Roads for New York.
