'Kid" Wilson Captured. Telegram readers will remember that several weeks ago a young lady, a student of the Normal, was robbed of her pocket book by an unknown negro on Walker avenue. Seeing the pocket book in the young lady's hand the negro hastily snatched it and made off. Policemen Weatherly and Whitting ton some time afterwards worked up evidence which pointed to "Kid" Wil son as the thief, and spotted him, locating him in Winston. They were on the alert and looking out for him, yesterday learned that he had been ar rested in Winston on a charge of thieving. The Winston authorities were notified of his robbing the young lady here and we are informed that he has confessed his guilt. If the case at Winston is not a strong one he will be turned over to the authorities here. Notice to Library Committee. James Whitcomb Riley, the poet, says: "I am continually haunted by the fear that my trunk will be lost, so I go about the country with a grip. In case there is ever a fearful railway ac cident and among the debris is a valise with an arm attached to it firmly they may bury it without further identifica tion as the fragments of the Boosier poet." A .Handsome Catalogue. We are in recept of a handsome cat alogue issued by the Greensboro Rus tic and Artistic Manufacturing Com pany. The designs of rustics shown are especially artistic and attractive and many a lawn and shady nook in Greensboro should be ornamented with them before ne summer is over. The factory of the company is now in running order and it proposes to supply everything from a hanging basket to a rustic bridge. Another Ship, Bought. By Cable to The Telegram. By Wire To The Telegram. Washington, March 17 Register of the Treasury Bruce died this morning. He had been ill for some weeks. Ready to Go. Dr. Blue Mountain Joe's advertis ing wagon was circulating in the east ern part of the county Tuesday. The wagon passed Mr. J. N. Lee's place, where a number of negroes were get ting some new ground ready. The agent threw in the circulars and called out: "Get ready to- go to war; got to go Thursday!" When the overseer went to the field none of the darkies were at work. He asked why they had quit. "Well," they said, "we have to go to war on Thursday and don't see no use work ing in the new ground any more." Charlotte Observer. A Growing Nuisance. A little observation will show that the number of itinerant beggars, the fellows who have work just down the road, or are getting home after a long illness, or are disabled by some afflic tion, is steadily growing. In nine cases out of ten they are frauds and professional dead beats. Those who are not able to take carepf themselves are provided for at public expense. Over half of these seekers of smypathy and a small contribution make their requests with a breath that half the barrooms in town have helped toladen. They "are fakes pure and simple. Run them in. The Centenary Meeting. The meeting at Centenary church continues with increasing interest and attendance. The congregation last night was much larger than at any of the former services. Rev. Mr. Fry's sermon was directed at church mem bers, and was a most earnest appeal for a united church. The necessity for such preaching is apparent in every church in the land. It was plain, pointed, full of power ' and pathos, feeling and fervor. You cannot spend a more;, profitable hour than to hear him tonight at eight o'clock. To Cure a Cold in One Day. The fourth, the Carlo Alberto, is now building. The Italian consul has been summoned to consider the matter. VIEWS OF GENKRAL MILES. By Wire to The Telegram. The populist conference met at 6 o'clock in the senate chamber. Hal W. Ayer called it to order and called Dr. Cy Thompson to the chair. Ayer was then made secretary with Dolly and Rivers assistants. Letters from populists were read for two hours, and a recess was taken. It is claimed that 75 populists are present. They spent most of the day caucusing and confer ing, and fairly swarmed in the offices in the capitol. The conference is still in session at 1 o'clock a. m., with no prospects of ad journment for several hours. Rail road Commissioner Caldwell intro duced a resolution earnestly requesting the state executive committee to meet not later than April 1st, and that pri maries be called at the earliest date so as to have an early convention. The resolution was unanimously adopted. The speeches were confined to 5 min utes. Nearly al the visitors spoke, re porting the conditions of their respec tive counties. There appeared to be a division for fusion on state matters. A large number are favorable to fusion with the democrats, national fusion in accordance with Butler's plan was op posed by some, who said they doubted the sincerity of the democrats. Col. Olds Correspondence. Want to Come North. Havana, March 16 The officers of the Maine who remain "here are dis appointed at not being ordered north, and believe they will not be sent back to the United States until it is certain that the court of inquiry into the loss of the battleship will not return to Ha vana. With the arrival of the big derrick Chief and other machinery, the wreck ing Work already shows signs of prog ress. The naval divers are still work ing about the wreck, under the direc tion of Captain Sigsbee and Lieuten ant Commander Wainwrignt, with Ensign Powellson, tomake any changes which may be called for by new dis coveries. Where Has It Gone? A searching party should be or ganized to find the new depot promised Greensboro by the Southern railway. It seems to have disappeared without leaving so much as a track in the sand or a trace of dust in the air. Every once in a while somebody inquires about it in a hopeless sort of way. It really looks as though the old, old eye-sore will remain and passengers be compelled to roast and swelter in the beastly little hole, now-passing for a depot, throughout the summer. During my command in Cuba they did not even dare dream about it. They knew how terrible a punishment awaited them. I had the Havana harbor well prepared for such an emergency. I rapidly finished the work, Campos had abandoned. If the insult is offered I hope that there will be a Spanish hand to punish it as terribly as it deserves." MRS. THURSTON'S DEATH SHOCK. Horrified at the Distress She Wit nessed in Matanzas. Key West, Fla. Mar. 15 The Amer ican yacht Anita, having on board the body of Mrs. Thurston, wife of Sena tor Thurston, and the members of the" congressional party who have been visiting Cuba, arrived here this after noon from Matanzas. Mrs. Thurston died at noon yester day of heart disease, believed to be hereditary. She had been much af fected at the scenes of suffering she witnessed. at Matanzas, especially in the case of the skeleton-like children. Mrs. Thurston ? when conscious that her end was near, said: "lam not sorry to go to rest, but I am grieved that my own children will be mother less." Mrs. Thurston has worn a small American flag next to her heart ever since the trip was commenced, and when she died the flag was clasped to her breast. She was noted for her great human ity, and when at Matanzas saw a gaunt mother sadly embracing her dy ing child. The feelings of Mrs. Thurs ton were so much excited by this sad scene, and probably this incident helped to hasten the end. - THE TRIALS OF EWART. Opposition Now is an Attack on His Moral Character. Washington, Mar. 16 Senator But ler said this afternoon that enough evidence had been submitted to the Senate judiciary committee to insure the rejection of Judge Ewart's nomi nation. He also said that he had more evidence that the committee could summon if they were not satis fied with th3 testimony already given. The opposition to Judge Ewart has now become an attack on his moral character. The impression -today is that the sub-committee, which heard the charges against Ewart, will wind up the case this week. Senator Butler said today he is confident that Ewart will be defeated. Friends of the Judge however, are "still hopeful that he will win out. News and Observer. TO! WATSON FOR GOVERNOR. SPAIN WILL CLAIM CONTRARY. flcKInley Will Not Ask Congress to Act but Will Take the Initiative in the flatter Himself. By Wire to The Telegram. New York, March 17 The Evening Journal's Washington special says: The authorities are already aware of what the court of inquiry report will contain when it reaches Washington. The president will fix upon a plan of action. The report will be delivered -in Washington between now and Monday, according to the best information in public circles. The president will claim that. Spain is legally responsi ble, through contributary negligence for the destruction of tjie Maine. This , it is thought, Spain will deny, citing internal accident as the cause.
