The problem that seems to be agita- tiag the minds of some of the citizens of this city is how Manager Griffith could manage to stage an opera com pany of forty people. I wish to Bay that I have seen and examined the op era house and I find it amply large to meet all tne requirements, and the peo ple are to be congratulated on having so neat a little theatre in their city, and I wish to say further that Mana ger Griffith is the right man in the right place, and with the encourage ment of the citizens he will give them the very best class of attractious ithas ever been their pleasure to attend in this city. There is none better than "Andrews Opera company" and they will open the Opera House this season on Fri day night with "Flotow's" beautiful opera ''Martha" to be followed on Saturday night with "Cavalleria Rus- ticana" and ''Pirates of Penzance." Congratulating the citizens of Greensboro on having such grand operas presented by such a grand company of artists, I am very truly, F. Li. Hunt, Bus. m'gT. Andrews Opera Co. Three Of the Finest. We venture the assertion that there are at this time no finer buildings go ing up in all North Carolina than the following three, which are now being erected in this city : The new office building of the bouth- ern Guarantee and Investment Co., on East Market street, five stories, to con tain one hundred rooms; the new Weill building on South Elm, granite front, four stories, to be occupied hy whole sale firms, and the handsome passen ger depot of the Southern Railway. V e repeat, they are second to none in the state, either complete and occu pied or now in process of construction. Watch the city of Greensboro. A Good Business. The Telegram is pleased to note the success with which Mr C. Gresham, proprietor of the railroad eating house is meeting. Mr. uresnam came to Greensboro from Charlotte only a short while ago and established his business in the old JVernon house, re cently removed to the rear of Clegg's hotel. He employs only competent and polite help and is now doing a good business. Saturday morning, on very short notice, he uprepared breakfast for fifty-seven sailors and they all went away praising him. Saturday afternoon Lee McCollum, colored, assaulted Mr. Rank Thomas, with a rock. The two men were dis puting over a settlement when the ne gro became enraged and seizing a large rock, threw it at Mr. 1 nomas, making a bad wound on the latters arm. The negro ran, but was caught in South Greensboro a short while af terward by Officers Pearce and Whit tington, who locked him up. He is a large, desperate looking fellow and has been in trouble before. Christmas Fowl. A train consisting of nine freight cars, loaded with turfceys, geese and pigeons, passed through Greensboro shortly after noon yesterday, going north. The birds were closely packed in crates and must have numbered far into the thousands. The turkeys were decidedly in the majority, showing that that bird is not losing favor with the Yankees. The Flshblate-Katz Company Havo opened a superb line of Christ mas neckwear, umbrellas, etc. Their artistic window, with neckwear and mufflers, has attracted a great deal of attention. The bill introduced by Representa- tive Ri"y, of Virginia, for the pur- Ihe vaiou country, is a step in the right direc- tion, and a prominent Virginian, a irienQ ,or ? administration, is quoted the hearty endorsement of President as dbjiuk inlaw uio iucbsuid n 111 uavo McKinley, and of the republican lead' ers in tne senate ana nouse oi repre- Carolina delegation, are earnestly in favor of the prompt reporting of the bill from the committee on .military affairs, and will give the measure, so far as can be ascertained, their undi vided support in the house when it comes to a vote. While it is not known that it can be done, the sugges tion has been made that the bill of Representative Rixey shall be reported promptly, taken up by the house and passed, and sent to tne senate imme diately, that the measure may be trans mitted to President McKinley before the adjournment for the Christmas holidays. The signature of the Presi dent to such a measure would be a suitable celebration of the Christmas season, and a recognition of the senti ment "Peace on Earth, Good Will to Men." Senator Pritchard, of North Caro lina, who last week introduced a bill to grant a pension of fifty dollars per month to the widow of Lieutenant Shipp, who- was killed during the seige at Santiago, has promised Senator Tillman, of South Carolina, to look after the measure, also to grant a pen sion to the widow of Col. Alston. Both of the bills are before the senate committee on military affairs. There seems to be no doubt but that Senator Pritchard will be able to secure the prompt reporting of the bills to the senate, though it may bh delayed un til after the Christmas holidays. Senator Tillman, who introduced the latter bill, has been sick with a bad cold during the past few days, and has been prevented from attending the sessions of the senate, but he is now all right and will be in his accus tomed place in the senate during the present week Hon. Josephus Daniels, editor of the RaleiL'h News and Observer and a member of the national democratic committee from North Carolina, was in Washington Friday and Saturday. Major Daniels in conversation stated that the coming session of the legisla ture will be a most interesting one, and that the subject of a new election law, making restrictions upon the right of suffrage, will be the leading topic discussed. The sentiment in fa vor of a constitutional amendment, patterned after that of South Caroli na or Mississippi, he says, is very strong, though it is difficult to tell what policy will be adopted, ferson- ally he declares himself in favor of taking the report of the Hawaiian commissioners, forming a government for that territory, as a model, for he says it accomplishes for Hawaii ex actly what is desired in tne soutn, tne limitation of suffrage to the intelu gent portion of the population. It is very likely that another south ern trip for president McKinley may arraDged in the spring, which will 1 take him as far as Tampa, Florida and New Orleans. Already a delega tion from New Orleans has been ap- I tr. invito th a tirsi dent to visit tnat city at any time which may best I suit his own personal convenience, and I there is strong taiic on tne part, oi invitinc the nreaident to attend the Confederate Veterans Reunion in May.
