In response to the above invititation the Bachelor Girls and their escorts last night gathered at the home of their hostess and spent one of the most pleasant evenings since the club was organized. After a ' short while spent in social conversation, and the rendi tion of a number of choice selections on the piano, by Miss Lizzie Balsley, a delicious and bounteous supper was served and fully enjoyed by those pre sent. After supper the remainder of the evening was spent at games, the most enjoyable of which was "The Initial Game." In this Miss Bessie Hosier, of New York, was the succesful con testant and carried off the first prize MEETING Mr. Z. V. Taylor cantured the booby. The evening was one of rare delight and pleasure and the occasion will be long and pleasantly remembered by the following who were present: Messrs. Misses John W. WOULD RATHER HANQ Than Be Confined In The Penitentiary For Life. News was received here this morn ing, announcing the fact that Gover nor Russell had commuted the sentence of Jasper Hinson from that of death to life imprisonment. The details of the killing of James Crawford by Hin son are well remembered by Charlotte people as it created public indigna tion and at one time it was thought that Hinson would be lynched and it was only owing to the coolneis and personal bravery of ex-Sheriff Smith that he was not hanged in front of the courthouse the day of his trial. A News reporter visited the -jail this morning and was the first one to inform him that the governor had, through the efforts of Senator F. I. Osborne, commuted his sentence to life impris onment. When the reporter informed Hinson of what he supposed would be good news, Hinson threw up his hands and exclaimed, "My God! not that. Tell Osborne not to accept that." After he had recovered from the ef fects of the startling news he said: "I never had a fair trial to start with and now it seems that I am not to have justice from the higher courts. I would rather be dead than to be con fined in prison all my life. Yes sir, I want a new and fair trial and if they find me guilty, I am ready to die on the gallows. I certainly would rather hang than to be sent to the penitentiary for life." Hinson still has hope that the su preme court will grant him a new trial. Charlotte News. Congressman-Elect Atwater Getting The "Lay of The Land" Before His Term of Office Begins. Special to the Telegram. Washington, March 3 The assur ance that Judge Ewart cannot be eon- firmed during the next two days, and that his nomination will go over un acted upon, has revived gossip con cerning his successor. If the senate does n t act upon the nomination fa vorably within the next twenty-four hours, or if the nomination is rejected by the senate, it is given out on excel lent authority that Judge Ewart will not again be appointed. The repub lican leaders from the state believe that Judge Ewart has an ample oppor tunity to demonstrate his ability to secure confirmation, which he is unable to secure. Senator Pritchard, it can be stated, unless he should change his mind does not desire the judgeship, and if he should, it is not believed, as stated on a former ocasion, that the president would consent to his leaving the senate chamber, which would give the democrats an additional senator. Senator Pritchard, before the appoint ment of Ewart was not favorable to his selection, and the appointment was made without his endorsement, though after the name was sent in, the senator worked for confirmation. It cannot be stated whom Senator Pritchard will now ask to have appointed to the bench. There is considerable talk about the capitol that Assistant Attor ney General Boyd, who is a member of the national republican committee from North Carolina . may become a candidate for the appointment, and may be endorsed - by Senator Pritch ard. Col. Boyd is an- active republi can, and in addition has the point in his favor of having been a McKinley man before the nomination of McKin ley for the presidency was made at St. Louis. It is stated that the president will this time allow Senator Pritchard to select the man for the judgeship, iu the hopes that the man whom he se lects may run the gauntlet of the United States Senate better than did the president's personal selection. The members of the North Carolina delegation in congress are making preparations to leave Washington for their various homes. Most of the del egation will leave Saturday afternoon and night, and it is expected that by Monday morning very few of the dele gation will be in Washington. Congressman-elect Atwater, of the Fourth North Carolina district, is in Washington, being the guest of Rep resentative Stroud. He has been al most a daily attendant at the sessions of the house this week, being shown about, and introduced by Representa tives Stroud and Shuford. He will remain in Washington until Saturday night, staying here for the purpose of being present to witness the death of of the 55th congress. The vote on the resolution declaring General Wheeler and his associates who served during the Spanish war, not entitled to their seats, is pleasing to the friends of the soldier-statesman. Several of the North Carolina delega tion on the roll call voted not to con sider the report of the judiciary com mittee. General Wheeler and his fel low members received congratulations from every side of the house. No further attempt will be made to oust them during this session, and future action will depend upon the action taken by the members themselves. It s understood that General Wheeler now intends to resign his commission just before congress reassembles forthe next session. Mr. Henry Roan, of Winston, N. C, s in Washington on a business trip. While in the city he is making his headquarters at the Metropolitan Hotel. On April 1st, Plymouth, North Car olina, will be raised to a postoffice of the presidential class, and the salary will be $1,000 per year. There are several applicants for the postmaster ship. Leonidas N. C. Spruill has been commissioned postmaster at Mackey Ferry, North Carolina. Senator Pritchard stated tonight that he has not yet given up hopes of Ewart's confirmation, and will make a strong effort when the senate goes into executive sessioa to secure a vote. He believes that if a vote is taken that Ewart will be confirmed. The Steamer Aberdeen. By Wire to the Telegram. Halifax, Mar. 3 The steamer Aber deen has arrived bringing the crew of Moravia.
