Two of the Southside Hose Com pany's men were painfully, but not seriously hurt yesterday afternoon while they were practicing on Summit avenue. Mr. Henry Donald fell from the wagon during a swi't run and was slightly bruise d on the side He did not abandon the practice for this and durirjg the next run was hit in the face by a hose coupling and quite badly hurt. Herbert Reynolds also fell from the wagon and was bruised on th left am and leg. Both the men will be unfitted for practice fcr a few days. Fatal Shooting Near Marion. A special to the Raleigh News and Observer says that Dan Jarrett and Ed Ball had a bloody fight in Hall town, five miles north of Mariou. Jar rett stabbed Hall several times in the abdomen and breast, aDd th- physician says he is likf-ly to die. Hall stot at Jarrett tcvcral times without effect The latter took to the woods and has thus far eluded arrest. An Old Excursion! t. Mrs. Rachael Kirkman, of friend ship, mother of Messrs. A. G. and S. A. Kirkman, went on the xcursion to Wilmington this morniDg Mrs. Kirk man is 83 years old, but is yet pos sessed of remarkable strength and vigor. Strawberry Cream. The West End baseball team has made arrangements with the New York strawberry growers to get just enough late strawberries to make five gallons of etrawberry cream for the West End lawn party, next Friday night, at the Academy lawn. By Wire to the Tei.bg bam. New York, July 11 A big five-story tenement house on Monroe street was burned this morning. Twenty-eight persons were injured or overcome by smoke, ir eluding one entire family of eight, fire of whom may die. The ten ants were awakened at four o'clock this morning by the halls filling with smoke. Police and firemen hurried to the rescue. There were many thrill ing escapes. Harris Beasak, with his wife and six children, who were on the sixth floor, were found un enscious. Three of the family were bad!y burned ana ovetcome by the STioke. The baby, alone unhurt, was fo nd asleep in its cradle. One hun dred and teventy-five persons inhab ited the tenement. LATKR NOT SO BAD. Bond Issue Discussed tons'on wires, at corner of Church and Fu'ton streets, was blown off in a big explosion this morning. The report was terrific and a pillar of flame shot info the air higher than the steeple of St. Paul's Church. A Sixth avenue car, passing with fifteen passengers, was lifted from the rails. None was injured. The Dispensary in Trouble (?) The directors, manager, clerk and porter of the Greensboro dispensary have been cited to appear before 'Squire Eckle on next Saturday, to show cause why they should not be in dicted for selling whiskey to a minor. It is charged by John T. Stack that his son, John H Stack, who is under age, bought whiskey from the dispen sary last week. It is understood that Col. John N. Staples represents Stack. Pied Piper Rehearsal. The initial rehearsal of the Pied Piper of Hamelin at the Academy of Music last evening was a s ccess and wa9 very gratifying to the manage ment, al'hough owing to several other meeting's in town tLe attendance was not as full as was expected. Another full rahearsal will be held on Thurs day evening at 8:30. Attention, Firemen! Johns & Son have decided not to build at present but have leased the commodious structure known as the Wheeler building and will manu facture their goods at this place as soon as fixtures, etc., can be placed in order, which will be about the flret of August. The company will make a line of parlor suits, lounges, mat tresses, etc. Vern'e Hedgecock is confined to his room with an attack of fever at his home in the northwestern part of the city. Joe Jackson, who was shot four times a few days since and whose wounds at the time were thought would prove fatal, was on the streets again today. He looks rather "under the weather," but eeems to be in good spirits and getting along all right. Mr. and Mrs. D. L. Clark left this morning for points in Chatham coun ty, going by private conveyance. Mr. Clark goes on business connected with his land which ia situated near Pitt boro. They will remain away about two weeks. The annual picnic of the Friends' orphanage will be given on the grounds of this institution, which are located near here, on Saturday, July 22nd, 1899. Address by Rhv. G. H. Detwiler,' of the Methodist church Gabtonia, N. C. Music will be fur nished by the Archdale cornet band. Contributions for the orphanage will be gladly accepted that day as well as any other time. .Everybody is invited and especially asked to bring a well filled basket of dinner. No doubt an immense c owd, as on former occa sions, will assemble at this place on the 22nd if the weather is favorable. R.y W. A. Gilliam, of Lexington, passed through the city last evening enroute home from Asheboro. His Friends were glad to shake his hand. Mr. Jno. Farlow left this morning for Gibsonville where he will, superin tend the erection of the machinery which is already on the ground for the Chi Far Consolidated Gold Mining Company, which is locate! near that place. Mr. Farlow tells us that the ore found down there is cf the finest grade and the company expects to re alize good results from thcr invest ment. The mine will be in operation by the first of August. Geo. T. Leach, Eq. , a former resident of this city, having had charge of the Bellevue Hotel for a number of years and which is now owned by him, ar rived in the city yesterday. Mr. Leach is at present living in Raleigh. Glad to have him with us. As the series' of meetings at the Me.hodibt Protestant church progresses more interest is manifested. Rev. POSITIVE STATEMENT IS MADE To This Effect In Washington The President Saw He Wouldn't Resign With a PI In Hint By Wire to Thk Telbgkam Washington, July 11 It is now statt d positively that the presideLt, during the last fortnight, has inti mated to Secretary Alger that they had reached the parting of the ways, and that if the secretary did not re sign at orce that he would force the president to ask for hts resignation. The president then asked for the secre tary 's resignation in a more formal way. Alger, after several days' con sideration, sent in his resignation to take effect some months hence. This was not intended to be" made public until fall, but now that it has leaked out, the date of Alger's resignation will undoubtedly be changed, and a formal announcement of his retirement from the cabinet may be looked for at any moment. GREAT SURPRISE CREATED By Uncle Sam's Refusal to Arbitrate the Hazel con Matter. i By Cable to The Tkljsgkam. Vienna, July 11-The refusal of the United States to arbitrate the Hazel ton matter has rraated the greatest surprise inasmuch as the American delegates to the peace conference at The Hague have been the warmest ad herent of arbitration. However, the refusal is not regarded as offensive or hostile or likley to lead to retaliation, it is not expected that Austria will push t! e matter further. Shamrock Is Leaky. By Cubic to Thb Telegram. London, July 11. Serious leaks were discovered today in the Sham rock. She was ordered to proceed immediately to Southampton for re pairs. Consternation prevailed aboard the ship ween it was found she had sprucg a leak. A great quantity of water bad gathered in the hull before the discovery was made. The leak was found along the ssams of the plates, whieh were injured when she went aground off Southampton, June 28th. White Personally Thanked. By Cable to the Telegram The Hague, July 11 It is learned that Queen Wilhelmina personally thanked Amoassador White, the head of the American delegation, for hia American ti ibute to Grotius. She ex pressed special admiration of White's speech, the cc asion of which was the placing of a tribute to Grotius' toonb at Delft. Important Order Issued. By Wire to The Tklkgram. Washington, July 11 An o-der has been issued by the president extending the privileges and the protection of the American flag to shipping from Porto Rico and the Philippines. All ships owned by residents of these islands at the time of the exchange of the ratifi cation treaties, are included in the order. New Record of Speed. By Wire to The Telbg ram. New York, July 11 The Kaieer Wil helm Der Grosse, which left here July 4th, arrived at Cherbourg yesterday afternoon, having established a new record of speed, averaging 22.6 knots per hour. By Wire to Thb Telegram. Potts ville, July 11 An attempt was made near here last night to wreck the Philadelphia and Beading passenger train, which was loaded with passen gers. Kuskie McKuskie, aged 8, and William Auman and Robert Evans, aged 7, respectfully, have been arrest ed charged with placing a heavy brake shoe and heel, weighing about 250 pounds, upon the track near a high embankment. As luck would have it, the front wheels of the locomotive pushed the obstruction away. A STARTLING DISCOVERY. Plans For the Overthrow of the French Government Unearthed. By Cable to The Telegram. Paris, July 11 It is stated that the report that was received by the pre fect of police revealing a royalist plot for the overthrow of the government, as published yesterday, .has been au thenticated. Count D'Castellane and others may be prosecuted. To Intercept Boer Supplies. By Cable to The Tklbgram. London, July 11 Two British war ships have arrived at Delagon bay for the purpose of Intercepting Boer supplies and avert hostilities. Frazler Jones Captured. Frazier Jones, the negro who seri ously cut John Quicker, also colored, across the abdomen, on the afternoon of the 3d inst., was captured by Dep uty Sheriff Weatherly, assisted" by members of the police force, thi9 after noon He had been hiding in a house on Ashe street, and there he was cap tured. Quicker is now on the road to recovery. Jones had been provided for by Nancy Albright and Dave Donnell, the latter furnishing his meals. It was by watching Donnell that the deputy located his man and when his dinner was carried to him today Mr. Weath erly walked in as if to share it. Jones was also injured in the fight. He bears an ugly wound inflicted by Quicker on his left leg. W. B. Young & Company. A. E Fordham, of A. E.
