GREENSBORO TELEGRAM, GREENSBORO, N.'C, SEPTEMBER 25; 1900, ii (f ; t ' : 3 il VI 3i 1 H - I ATTACKED BY HIS WIFE'S PET. MAN TORN BY A SAVAGE BULLDOG. Saved Only by a Little Dog Which Turned the Big One Away-A Dull, Campaign. TVak Forest's New Gymnasium Sena tor Pritchard Campaigning in Ohio and West Virginia Young Lawyers After License. Special Correspondence of The Telegram. Raleigh, Sept. 25. The Supreme Court devoted yesterday to the exami nation of applicants for license as at torneys. Of them there were forty seven, two of whom were colored. Out of this number twenty-five were of the University Law School, and thirteen from that of Wake Forest. The ex amination was held in the Senate chamber. It will be several days be fore it is known who passed. The Supreme Court will today be gin the hearing of appeals from the First district. Tvo attorneys from that district, Charles F. Warren and W. B. Rodman, of Washington, are here as counsel. The Seaboard Air Line is building a large freight depot at Henderson, to replace the one burned last summer. It is also building a passenger station there. The phosphate mill here, which is, by the way, one of the best paying in dustries in the State, is being en larged. A criminal term of the Superior Court began here yesterday. There are no capital cases on the docket. Solicitor E. W. Poa is again sick and his brother, James H. Pou, is acting as solicitor. It is said that the cotton crop in this section is better than has been report ed. Cotton can stand a great deal of hot weather. A large July crop was made, to use an expression of the cot ton growers. Senator Pritchard has gone to Ohio and West Virginia to make campaign speeches and will be in those State9 until October 8th. Three convicts from Wayne have arrived at the penitentiary, all to serve short terms. Very few convicts arrive these days. The counties take nearly all. Interest in the State Fair wasi never so great as it is this-year. The attrac tions are to be more varied. De spite the drought a very fine exhibit of farm products is assured. Fifteen varieties of Western North Carolina apples were shipped to Paris by Secretary Bruner. Next week he will have on exhibition at the museum twenty-five varieties. The apple show he made last spring attracted much at tention, but this one will be finer. The trustees of Wake Forest College are building a gymnasium. It will be two stories in height. The second story is nearly completed. It is the in tention to gst it under roof before cold weather. Yesterday a man named Johnson, who lives here, was atttackedand very badly bitten by a savage and un friend! y bulldog he owned. The dog was his wife's pet. Johnson was not -liked by the dog. A policeman last week urged Johnson to kill the brute. Yesterday Johnson attempted to pat the dog when it sprang at him and lac erated bis arms and legs by repeated bites. A little dog ran out of the barn and seized the bulldog. The latter turned Johnson loose. The latter ran into the house and closed the door. Neighbors turned out and began a fusillade. It required no less than 9 shots to kill the dog, a musket, shot guns and pistols beiDg used. It is the current comment of both Democrats and Republicans that they have never seen a duller National cam paign in this State than the one now in progress. There is no "ginger" in it. The fact seems to be that the State campaign was such a live one as to make the national one flat in compari son. The negroes are now talking about an exodus to Oklahoma. Three new lodges of Odd Fellows have been organized at Franklinton, Hominy and Leaksville. Over sixty dwellings are in course of construction in Raleigh and its suburbs. The Raleigh Hosiery Company now employs 100 persons. Wake now has 58 county convicts. It has 62 inmates of its county home. Licking Imperialism. Greenville Reflector. What is imperialism? Well, every time you lick a stamp to put on a check or telegram, imperialism comes forcibly home to you. Do you like its taste? Editor "You write a well-rounded article." Hines, of Manchester, Iowa, writing of his almost miracu lous escape from death says: "Expo sure after measles induced serious lung trouble, which ended in consump tion. I had.fi-equent hemorrhages and coughed night ad day AH my doc tors said I must soon die. Then I be gan to use Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption, which completely cured me. Greensboro, N. C 4? is wnere we stand in the lumber business. At the kicking post, as it were, in regard to prices. First comes the owner of the timber. He just woke up to the value of it and wants double last year's prices. Then the sawmill man. He has n:t been making a fortune andr thinks now he should share a little in the general prosperity They say to us : "We must have so much for our trees and work." After a while it is "up to you." Don't kick. You don't suppose we have nerve enough to put up prices un less they had first been put up on us. No, indeed. But puces are NOT high. They have been to low and are just now getting reasonable. Your children will be glad to build at double the price id now costs you. It is a trite, but true saying, if you want to build, "Now is the time." And ours is the place to eret the stuff GREENSBORO LUMBER CO. BINGHAM SCHOOL -ESTABLISHED 1793 ORANGE COUNTY, . NEAR MEBANE N.
