How Heroes Are Made.
A pretty and pathetic story has been
thp naDers. In
which a colored workman ou tin India
napolis was pictured as giving up his
life in order that a fellow-workman
who was married might have his life
fp and chilren. The
story was told with a variety of pret
ty and dramatic details, and naturally
called forth much praise of the humble
hero.
The aftermath is told in this way by
the New York Times:
"On Monday last we published a very
interesting and pathetic story from Ii
dianapolis about a negro who when
steam was accidentally turned ino the
big boiler in which he and a companion
were working.nobly gave theother man
a chance to escape first and in conse
quence of the delay was himself fatal
ly burned. The tale was one of the kind
we are glad to pubiish, and as it came
"through the regular Associated Press
channels, the possibility that it was
false or inaccurate did not occur to
us then. The net day, however, Mr.
Joseph B. Gilder sent us a letter ex
pressing his appreciation of the ne
gro's heroism and inclosing a contribu
tion to serve as the nucles for a monu
ment fund. His example was followed
by several other generous readers of
the Times. Thereupon the duty to in
vestigate was borne in on us, and we
investigated with the lamentable result
of learning on indisputable Indiana
polis authority, including the testimo
ny of the man who was saved, that,
except for the fact that an accident of
the sort did occur the story was a
"yellow journal fake," rashly accept
ed by the Associated Press agent, and
that the monument scheme would
have to be abandoned. When the steam
was turned into the boiler the two men
init rushed for the manhole, each for
himself, and had it not been for. the
desperate struggle which each made
to get out first, both could easily have
escaped in safety. There was no dis
cussion as to the superior right to life
possessed by a married man, no dis
play of self-sacrifice nothing in short,
eicept new and needless proof that
poor humanity, when confronted with
by sudden and terrible peril, sometimes
fails to demonstrate its higher possi
bilities. So yesterday we returned the
contributions we had received to tho
donors, with sincere regrets that we
had excited their emotions without
cause.
No comment on this is necessary.

When there is a natural and healthy circulation of tne blood, the entire
quantity, estimated at one-eighth the weight of the body, passes through the heart
every five minutes. This rapid flow of the blood through the system prevents the
entrance of disease germs and impurities of every description. It filters out all that
is not necessary or good for the growth and development of the body and nourish
ing and strengthenicg the muscles, tissues, nerves and bones. But, unfortunately,
few persons can rightly claim an absolutely pure blood supply and perfect and
unpolluted circulation, and in consequence are exposed to innumerable diseases.
Contagious Blood Poison, the greatest enemy to mankind, enters the system
through the blood, and Cancar, Scrofula, Rheumatism, Catarrh, Eczema, Salt
Rheum, Psoriasis, Tetter in fact the majority of human ailments are caused by
poisons or humors that are engen
dered and fostered in a sluggish TitC BtOOCf MS the SOUFCG
and impoverished blood. Old
sores, chronic ulcers and rheumatic pains are com- of it SttQfifftH
mon, especially among old people, whose blood
naturally grows thin and pale because of the lack of the red corpuscles that give
color and strength to youthful blood. Sallow complexions and rough, oily skins
evidence some constitutional or blood trouble, which salves, lotions, powders nor
any external treatment can cure. Diseases that originate in the blood, whether
they manifest themselves as ulcers, tumors, itching eruptions, muscular or bone
pains, require a tonic and blood purifier such as S. S., which not only antidotes
and neutralizes blood poisons and humors, but possesses health-giving tonic proper
ties that no other blood medicine does. It goes down to the very foundation of
. the disease and eliminates from the system every-
rOiiUXQti BlOOtl thing of a poisonous character or that obstructs and
clogs the circulation. It builds up and imparts
new strength and vitality to the old innutritious
. Dlooa, ana when the arteries and veins are once
more filled with new rich blood, the general health begins to improve, muscles
grow stronger, and sores and eruptions of every kind disappear.
S. S. S. is the only guaranteed purely vegetable blood purifier, and the purest
and most reliable in all blood diseases. It has been tested in thousands of cases
during the past fifty years and is more popular today than ever. We will be glad
to send you our book free, and if in need of medical advice write our physicians all
about your case ; this information will cost you nothing and comes from experi
