College Girl Who Robbed Stu dents Declared Insane Her Eife Exemplary and "Her Cla Standing High- Northampton, Mass.,. June 9. Two prominent nhycicians in this section of the Stite have reported that Miss Ma- bl L. Burt, of Bridgeton, N. J., a for mer Smith College student, who is un der arrest in the county jail on the charge of larceny of money, watches, and jewelry to the amount of $5,000 in the room of the students of Smith Col lege, is suffering from mental derange ment, and should receive treatment. Dr. Mary Brewster.physician at Smith College, visited the girl last night and again today, and she reported find ing her in such a condition mentally that she expressed a desire that Dr. Hansen, the woman physician at the State Insane Asylum, be called into the case. Dr. Hansen, after making a careful investigation expressed the opinion that the girl is suffering from mental derangement and should receive im mediate treatment. Mr. Bert spoke tonight of the nei . vous and impulsive cnaracter of his daughter, and said she could not be in her right mind and commit the crime she is accussed .of. Hhe said her life had beeen an exemplary one while at home. She was a bright scholar, and was valedictorian of her class when she graduated from the high school. One of the physicians who saw Miss Burt today expressed the opinion that her nerves had been unstrung to such a degree that it had affected her mind to the extent that she had lost control of her actions at times. The state ments of experts will be certified to be fore Judge Bassett, of the Probate Court, and then submitted to the grand jury, which meets tomorrow. Mr. and Mrs. Burt spent several hours today wifli their daughter in th3 Hampshire County jail. Headless Body of AVoman. Lowell. Mass., June 10. The head less and decomposed body of a young woman was found under a heap of brush in a patch of woodland in Chel msford this afternoon. Murder had been committed in a horrible fashion, for the head had been separated from the trunk by a series of slashes with a dull weapon. The meager clothing afforded no clew to the identity of the unfortunate, and the circumstances offer a case ot interest outside rather than in the dir ect community, as the theory quickly set up is that the body had been taken into the woods and thrown in a spot that offered some seclusion. A physician, on viewing the body, thought it had lain in the place where it was found for four or five weeks. To morrow the entire neighborhood will be looked over, in hope of finding the woman's heiui. Whether or not there were body wounds remains to be shown by examination. An abrassion near the heart may have been fatal. One of the men who asisted in remov ing the body concluded that it was from a bullet. ' The police know of no missing wo man in Lowell or neighboring towns. Bank's Stolen Gold Recovered. Mineral Point, Wis., June 10. Thir teen thousand dollars more of the gold coin stolen from the First National Bank of this place on May 24 has been iecovered. It was found in the vault of an out house of the City Hotel, about a block from the looted bank, at which the prisoner. Steward Jelleif, boarded. It is believed that the detectives ob tained information as to the hiding place of the coin from the prisoner, one containing f : 000 and the other containing $1,000 each. This find and the $8,000 previously recovered, com prises all the gold missing from the bank. The balance. $5,000. is in cur rency and the detectives hope to recov er it later. A Nation of Farmers. Philadelphia Record. Still we are a nation of farmers. In complete census returns show that in 1900 ther were 5,700,000 farms under cultivation as compared with 4,564. C91 in 1890. This may be deemed a re markable increase, showing that the growth of our industries in syme trical, the farmers keep pace in the maich. forward. The single discourage ing features of the situation is the in crease of tenant farming. The diseases most feared are those which are inherited handed down from generation to gen eration, and family to family. By far the most destructive of these is Cancer, which finds the greatest number of its victims among the children and grand-children of those whose blood was tainted with this dreadful malady. You may carry this poison in the blood for years, but as the vital powers begin to wane a slight bruise or cut, wart or mole, sore or pimple may develop into Cancer. From middle life to old age is the time when the slumbering poison is most apt to break out, a sore or ulcer often degenerating ito Cancer, and Tumors become more progressive and ulcerate. through the skin, the sharp, shooting pains causing the most intense suffering. The Cancer patient naturally grows despondent as one after another the usual remedies fail, and the sore shows no sign of healing. The impurities that have been accumulating in the system, perhaps for generations, cannot be eliminated nor the poisoned blood made pure by salves, washes and . plasters. The proper treatment is to purify and build up the blood, remove the cause, when the sore or ulcer heals. S. S. S. goes directly tiny ulcer came, just under the left eye.
