Boston, Mass., June 12.-With the proud distinction of being the fastest battleship in Amercia and the speediest of her class in the world, the new sea fighter Illinois lies at anchor in Presi dent's Roads tonight after a most suc cessful trial. Over the government course from Cape Anne to Cape Porpoise and return a distance of 66 nautical miles, she raced today under the watchful eyes of United States naval representatives and established a new record by main taining an average speed of 17.31 knots for four consecutive hours. Not only did she demonstrate that she was faster than any war ship of her size afloat, but she proved her ability to turn upon an enemy with extraordi nary quickness by describing a com plete circle within 300 yards, or a little more than twice her length, in three minutes and ten seconds, while plough ing through the sea at full speed. Steadiness and reserve power char acterized the performance of the ship throughout the severe test. The work of her engines was smooth and even, and the records of the day showed but one-tenth of a knot difference in speed between the northern run and the re turn. The machinery easily met every requirement, and not an accident of any Kind marred the success of the day. Rear Admiral Sampson, who was aboard 'unofficially, and Rear Admiral Kvans, who acted as president of the Trial Board, as well as the other neval officers who participated in the trial, were thoroughly pleased with the new champion, and as she steamed back to her anchorage with a broom at her masthead the officials of the New port News Shipbuilding Company, whose three years of labor had reached such a happy climax, wTere enthusiasti cally congratulated. ALL CONDITIONS PERFECT. The vessel left the upper harbor, where she had been anchored since her arrival here on Monday, soon after 8 o'clock, and made her way slowly to wards Glocester. All conditions were perfect for a sucessful test of the big vessel. The sky was clear and bright, warm sunshine bathed the battleship as she pressed her way towards Cape Ann. A light breeze from the north west cooled the heat of the summer day, and gave a clear atmosphere. -JRearl Admiral R. D. Evans was in charge of today's trial as the head of the Government's Board. The oth er officers of the Board are: Captain C. S. Train, Commander N. H. Hemp hill, Commander Charles O. Roelker, Lieutenant Commander Richard D. Vreeland, Lieutenant Commander Ri chard Henderson, Commander Wash ington Lee Copps. Many prominent navnl officers and leading men in oth er departments of government, poli tical and business life, were guests of the Newport News Company, on board the ship. The Illionis is a sister ship to the battleship Alabama, Her keel was laid in 1897. Her displacement is 11, '25 tons, her contract speed 16 knots, and her horse power 10,000, and her armament consists of four 13-inch breech-loading rifles, 14 6-inch rapid fire guns as a main battery, and 16 0 pounders rapid-fire, six 1-pounder rapid-fire, 4 colts and 2 3-inch rapid-fire guns as a secondary battery.
